When and where did you get started? The band was founded in the late '80s by me (Bobby Houck) and Hank Futch. We're South Carolina natives who have played together in one incarnation or another for 22 years. We started in 1987. We grew up in Florence SC, just down the road from Fayetteville. We were actually in cub scouts together. We're based out of Charleston, SC, but actually started the band in Richmond, VA. We moved up there for a couple of years after college. How did the band get its name? I went to Davidson College and was in a fraternity there. There was a PJ punch drink called Blue Dog Punch. It only was available at one party called the Progressive Drinking Party, which was actually outlawed. The drink had blue food coloring and dry ice so it smoked when you put in your cup. We always liked dogs, and knew we wanted dogs in our name, so the name stuck. How would you define your music? Country rock. We do have elements of blue grass, and we do some funky music, a little pinch of this and a pinch of that. Who are your favorite bands/influences on your music? Hank comes from a bluegrass background, Doc Watson, Tony Rice, those kind of bands we listened to a lot of, epecially early on. If you went to college during the 80s like we did, you couldn't escape The Grateful Dead. In some ways our band is kind of like that, in terms of variety. The Grateful Dead covered George Jones to The Rolling Stones. And we do that - we can cover George Jones, or The Who. Do you write your own music and where does that inspiration come from? Yes, we do. We've got nine CDs — a lot of the first couple were covers. We didn't really start writing until about 1995. We have three CDs of all original material. I do a good bit of the writing, but we all have contributed. And there are other people that we write with a lot. Sometimes the band gets together and just starts jamming and throwing out ideas on the spot. We've written songs where we had music but no words. And the words come later. The major- ity of times, it comes together. Inspiration can be anything — something someone said, some- thing you hear or think, life experiences, love, relationships, death, children, you name it. You look for an idea or phrase that catches your attention. If you only had two words to describe your band what would they be? Kick ass, no just kidding. Looney tunes, just kidding. "Country Rock" describes the music. "Spontaneous Electicism" describes the band. When we play live, we don't have a set list — we just go off the top of our heads. Sometimes people request songs we don't even know and we'll do them. We're pretty spontantous — it keeps us fresh and keeps things exciting. What are your hopes/goals for the future of your band? To write more. These days we're not touring far and wide like we used to. But we always welcome the opportunity to play with artists that we love. We've played with Willie Nelson, Widespread Panic, Bruce Hornsby. A goal for 2010, is that we want to do more songwriting, and put out some new songs. The goal is always to write a great song. Ultimately, one that gets heard far and wide. It all starts with the song. Without an orginal song, you're just kind of treading water. Where do you see the band five or 10 years from now? I see us still in Charleston. We're now reaching our mid-40s, most of us, and we are to the point now where there's no reason to quit, but we're just getting used to the idea that we're going to be playing 'til we're old. In 10 years, I predict we'll be playing shows in one form or the other, we may be doing it a little less frequently than now. Look at Doc Watson and Ralph Stanley, all those guys are still playing. Where can Fayetteville music lovers check you in the near future? We will be performing on Nov. 12 at Rhythm & Blooms, a concert at Campbellton Landing benefitting the Cape Fear Botanical Garden. The concert starts at 8 p.m. We've played many times in Fayetteville, but not in a while. We're looking forward to getting back there. On the Web, fans can find us at www.bluedogs.com. And we're on FaceBook, MySpace, Twitter, You Tube. Just search for The Blue Dogs.
