6B Daily News – Tuesday, August 23, 2011 It's alive! Space station's humanoid robot awake CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA's humanoid robot has finally awakened in space. Ground controllers turned Robonaut on Monday for the first time since it was delivered to the International Space Station in February. The test involved send- ing power to all of Robonaut's systems. The robot was not com- manded to move; that will happen next week. ''Those electrons feel GOOD! One small step for man, one giant leap for tinman kind,'' Robonaut posted in a Twitter update. (All right, so a Robonaut team mem- ber actually posted Monday's tweets under AstroRobonaut.) The four visible light cameras that serve as Robonaut's eyes turned on in the gold-colored head, as did the infrared camera, located in the robot's mouth and needed for depth perception. One of Robonaut's tweets showed the view inside the American lab, Destiny. ''Sure wish I could move my head and look around,'' Robonaut said in the tweet. Robonaut — the first humanoid robot in space — is being tested as a possible astro- naut's helper. The robot's handlers at Mis- sion Control in Houston cheered as everything came alive. The main computers — buried inside Robonaut's stomach — kicked on, as did the more than 30 processors embedded in the arms for controlling the joints. ''Robonaut behaved himself,'' ''Just like a crew member has to kind of acclimate themselves to zerogravity, our robot has to do a very similar thing, kind of wiggle itself and learn how it needs to move." — project manager Nicolaus Radford said deputy project manager Nicolaus Radford. ''Oh, Robo- naut definitely got an 'A.' He won't be held back a grade, if that's what you want to know.'' ''It was just very exciting,'' he said. ''It's been a long time com- ing to get this thing turned on.'' The robot was delivered on space shuttle Discovery's final flight. It took this long for the operating software to get up there, and for the astronauts to have enough time to help with the experiment On Sept. 1, controllers will command Robonaut to move its fingers, hands and arms. ''It's been asleep for about a year, so it kind of has to stretch out a little bit,'' Radford told The Associated Press. ''Just like a crew member has to kind of accli- mate themselves to zerogravity, our robot has to do a very similar thing, kind of wiggle itself and learn how it needs to move'' in weightlessness. For now, Robonaut exists from the waist up. It measures 3 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 330 pounds. Each arm is 2 feet 8 inch- es long. Fla. AG: Casey Anthony should serve probation ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Casey Anthony should be forced to serve probation for check fraud because it was impossible to enforce the sentence when she was jailed while awaiting trial on charges of murdering her 2-year- old daughter, Florida's attorney general said Monday. A court filing from Attorney General Pam Bondi's office opposes efforts by Anthony's attorneys — who say the woman is now back in Florida — to pre- vent her from serving the proba- tion sentence. Last week, Antho- ny's attorneys filed an appeal in state court arguing she had already served the probation sen- tence while she was jailed on the murder charge. Anthony was acquitted last month of murdering her daughter, Caylee, in a case unrelated to the check fraud, and she was released from the Orange County Jail. Since then, she has kept a low profile, and her exact where- abouts have been secret. ''Legally, it is clear that a defendant cannot serve probation while incarcerated,'' the attorney general said in the filing. Circuit Judge Stan Strickland sentenced Anthony to a year of probation in January 2010 after she pleaded guilty to stealing checks from a friend. At the time, Strickland said Anthony should serve the probation upon her release, but those instructions never made it into a written order. Corrections officials interpreted the sentence to mean Anthony could serve the probation while she was in jail. Strickland clarified in an order earlier this month that Anthony must begin her probation now that she is out of jail. He then recused himself from the case and turned it over to Judge Belvin Perry, who had presided over Anthony's murder trial. Perry upheld Strickland's order, which Anthony's attorneys appealed last week to the Fifth District Court of Appeals in Daytona Beach. If the order is upheld, Anthony has until noon Friday to report to the probation office. A Department of Corrections spokeswoman said Monday that there is a possibility Anthony could report to a probation office outside Orlando. Speaking in general terms, spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger said if a proba- tioner who was sentenced in Orlando has established a resi- dence in another part of Florida, the probationer could report to the probation office in that part of the state. Plessinger, however, said the agency will not disclose when or where Anthony will report to pro- bation, as a safety precaution. Because Anthony has received death threats, Perry said in his order that the department could keep private any probation infor- mation that generally is a public record in other cases. Anthony is back in Florida and will report to a probation office if the appeal fails, her attorney, Jose Baez, said during an interview Sunday night on Fox News' ''Geraldo At Large.'' ''We are going to follow the law wherever the courts follow the law and I am certain she will do what's asked of her if neces- sary, and hopefully it won't come to that,'' Baez said. The attorney said Anthony had spoken with her parents, George and Cindy, but had not talked with her brother, Lee. Anthony is undergoing therapy and counsel- ing and is ''trying to get a grasp of what happened to her,'' Baez said. Anthony's legal team is con- cerned about her safety, given that she has received threats, and she is in a safe location, said Baez, although he wouldn't say where in Florida she was. ''This is someone who has a lot of figuring out of what is left of her life,'' Baez said. Flames spread over 200 acres in Cajon Pass SAN BERNARDINO (AP) — The California Department of Transportation says two brush fires are burning in the mountains along Interstate 15 in Cajon Pass. Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga says the blazes erupt- ed about 1 p.m. Monday and are snarling traffic in the moun- tain pass in western San Bernardino County. San Bernardino National Forest spokesman John Miller tells KCAL-TV 425 firefight- ers are battling the flames with helicopters, engines and water tankers. Miller says about 200 acres of brush and one mobile home have burned. Caltrans says only two of five northbound lanes of I-15 are open and there is a heavy backup. The southbound side is fully open but is also experi- encing spectator delays. Cajon Pass snakes between the San Bernardino and San Gabriel Mountains, carrying traffic between the inland val- leys and the high desert. A pair of legs currently are being designed and should be launched in 2013. Radford said if everything continues to check out well, the robot may be able to take on a few mundane chores — like taking air velocity measurements inside the space station — early next year. For now, Robonaut — also called R2 — is designed to stay inside the space station. Future versions might venture out on spacewalks, saving astronauts time while keeping them safe. During Monday's two-hour test, U.S. astronaut Michael Fos- sum and Japanese spaceman Satoshi Furukawa took Robonaut from its sleeping bag, placed it on its fixed pedestal, then floated away as ground controllers took over. The robot went back into its bag following the test. Because Robonaut has some flammable parts, NASA wants it stored in its fireproof bag. Controllers were tempted to make the robot move, but held off. ''We want to be respectful,'' Radford said. ''It's a very compli- cated piece of hardware.''
