Wednesday, August 24, 2011 – Daily News 5B Native Plant Society activities for September General Meeting Wednesday, Sept. 7, 7:30 p.m. Chico Library, 1108 Sherman Ave. This month's program will feature our own members. Ron Coley will give a short presentation on the Rare Plant Treasure Hunts and Phyllis Lindley will share slides of plants and scenes from the Sierra. Other members are invited to bring their own slides to share. Ridge Lakes, Lassen Volcanic National Park Saturday, Sept. 3 We will drive highways 32 and 89 75 miles to the Ridge Lake trail head at the Sulphur Works parking lot, about 1-1/2 miles north of the park's southern Visitor's Center. Experience an alpine high with a minimum of effort. You will have to hike a steep trail to gain 1,000 feet of elevation in a little over a mile. The trail is clean and easy to follow, and we will make many stops to view flowers and spec- tacular vistas. The two Ridge Lakes lie cupped in a stark high country bowl at the base of a bony ridge between two of Lassen Park's major peaks. We will return via the same trail. Meet at Chico Park & Ride west lot in time to leave by 9 a.m. Call the leader for an alternate meeting site. Wear sturdy shoes and bring lunch, water, sun/wind/insect protection and money for ride sharing. Leaders: Gerry, 530-893-5123 and Wes 530- 342-2293. Hat Lake to Paradise Meadow, Lassen Volcanic National Park Sunday, Sept. 11 We will drive highways 32 and 89 86 miles to the trail head in Lassen Park. For wildflowers during mid- summer, Paradise Meadows is one of the best areas in the Park. We expect many flowers still in bloom due to this year's delayed snow melt. The meadow, at 7200 feet, has a glaciated head-wall for a scenic backdrop. Ele- phant head and gentian can be seen near hat Lake. Find scarlet gilia along the first mile and satin lupine in timbered openings. Watch for columbine, lupine, monkshood, pen- stemon, Copeland's owl's clover and bog orchid in the meadow. From Hat Lake the trail climbs 700 vertical feet over a distance of 1.4 miles to the meadow. Meet at the west lot of Chico Park and Ride in time to leave by 8:30 a.m. Call leader for alternate meeting place and time. Wear sturdy shoes and bring lunch, water, sun/insect protection and money for ride sharing. Leaders: Gerry, 530- 893-5123 and Wes 530-342-2293. Willow Lake and Terminal Glacier Sunday, Sept. 18 We wil drive north from Chester to the campground at the south end of Willow Lake and hike along the east short to the trail to Terminal Geyser, about 1-1/2 miles on the south side of Lassen Park. On the way back, we can slog along the west shore of the lake and cross over to a remarkable floating bog that occu- pies the west side. This island is largely made up of sedge plants but also has 2 species of sundews and many of their interspecific hybrids. We will also see many plants of Scheuchzeria palustris, thought to be extinct in California but rediscovered here in 1988. Be prepared to get your feet wet. Meet at Chico Park & Ride west lot at 8:30 a.m. Call the leader for an alternate meeting site. Bring lunch, water, hiking gear and money for ride sharing. Leaders: Gerry, 530-893-5123 and Wes 530-342- 2293. Forest Lake and Brokeoff Trail Sunday, Sept. 25 We will drive to the southwest entrance of Lassen Park and the Brokeoff Mountain trail head at 6,600 feet. We will climb along a small creek bordered by mountain alder and enter a magnificent old growth red fir/western white pine forest to a small lake at the base of Mt. Brokeoff at 7,300 feet in eleva- tion. about 1-1/2 miles. Carpets of silvery satin lupine border the trail and the lush meadow harbors yellow arnica and blue aster. Meet at Chico Park & Ride west lot at 8:30 a.m. Call the leader for an alternate meet- ing site. Wear sturdy shoes and bring lunch, water and money for ride shar- ing. Leaders: Gerry, 530-893-5123 and Wes 530-342-2293. Maidu Medicine Walk Sunday, Oct. 2 Meet at Horseshoe Lake in Upper Bidwell Park (parking area E) at 9 a.m. for a short, one-mile walk to see about 30 of the plants used by the local Maidu Indians for medicine, food and crafts, including soaproot for cleansing suds and catching fish, elderberry for flutes and clappers, gray pine for skin ointment and food, and many others. Over by noon. Leader: Wes 530-342-2203. CHP offers Start Smart Nationwide, car crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers and California is not immune to this disturb- ing trend. In 2008, more than 24,000 drivers between 15 and 19 years of age were involved in fatal and injury collisions in California. Since May 25, there have been more than 50 injury caus- ing collisions in Tehama County and at 6 p.m. on Aug. 27 the Corning Police Department and the California Highway Patrol are teaming up to do something about this trend. Striving to keep teens safe on the road, Corning Police and CHP continue to educate young drivers in Tehama County with the federally grant-funded Start Smart pro- gram. The overall goal of this program is to reduce the number of people killed or injured on the state's roadway through education. "New drivers lack experience," said CHP Red Bluff Area Commander Lt. Todd Garr. "Through interactive education programs like Start Smart, we help California's teen drivers learn to make good choices behind the wheel." The Start Smart program is a free, two-hour interactive driver safety class for teens and their parents or guardians. During the course, officers illustrate the critical responsibil- ities of driving and collision avoidance techniques. Parents are also reminded of their responsibility to help teach their new driver and model good behavior. The class will be at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Corning City Council Chambers, 794 Third St. According to the Integrated Traffic Records System, within CHP's jurisdiction from 2006 through 2008, there were 34,086 fatal and injury collisions involving at least one driver between the ages of 15 and 19. These collisions resulted in 895 motorists' deaths and 53,121 people injured. Statewide statistics show that 88,270 fatal and injury collisions with at least one teen driver result- ed in 1,488 people killed and 137,307 victims injured. "Keeping young drivers in our community safe is a big job," Garr said. Parents and teens can reserve a spot in the Aug. 27 class by calling the Red Bluff area office at 527-2034. This pro- gram is supported by a grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traf- fic Safety Administration.
