By Jay Bobbin © Zap2it Q : Why was Sweets killed off "Bones"? — Judy Powers, via e-mail A : After we saw that episode, we knew it would take only about two minutes for fans to start writing and asking ... and indeed, they did. Stephen Nathan, an executive pro- ducer of the Fox show, sent a letter to the press acknowledging "all the hate mail" received over the decision to end actor John Francis Daley's run on the series. Nathan's simple explanation was, "Shows evolve." Killing off a major character is always a big — and risky — way to do that, but the producer assures that the character and the program will "make sure Sweets didn't die for nothing" as the season proceeds. Q : I see that "Saturday Night Live" is marking its 40th anni- versary this season. Who was the show's first guest host? — Pete Dodge, Antioch, Calif. A : George Carlin filled that role to help inaugurate the NBC show on Oct. 11, 1975. Interestingly, it was only called "Saturday Night" then, because Howard Cosell was hosting a primetime ABC variety show titled "Saturday Night Live" ... whose en- semble of comedy players happened to include someone named Bill Mur- ray. Both he and the title became parts of the NBC franchise in 1977. If you're interested in classic "Sat- urday Night Live" episodes, NBC has started a weekly primetime hour on Saturdays dubbed "Vintage SNL," featuring some of those installments (including the one with guest host Richard Pryor that started that run last month). Not only is that a nice way to mark the 40-year milestone, it also gives extra promotion to the new "SNL" episode that airs later that night. Q : I'm enjoying watching the "Adventures of Superman" reruns on Me-TV, but they have a different Lois Lane than I remem- ber. Did more than one actress play the role? — Jim Saunders, Buffalo, N.Y. A : Yes. Rather famous for her dis- tinctive shriek in portraying mo- ments of peril, Phyllis Coates played the intrepid reporter in the series' first season, as she had in the earlier feature film "Superman and the Mole Men" — which later was repurposed for the television show as the two- part episode "The Unknown People." During a delay on production of the program's second season, Coates had made another commit- ment, so the producers summoned Noel Neill to take over as Lois. She also had played the part before, in two Saturday-afternoon movies seri- als that starred Kirk Alyn as the Man of Steel.
