Derek Lee Bishop — Singing for World Peace by STEPHANIE CRIDER Up & Coming Weekly re- cently had a chat with musician Derek Lee Bishop. He has big plans tio make a difference in the world. UCW: What instruments do they play? DLB: Acoustic guitar and voice. UCW: Give us a brief his- tory lesson. When and where did you get started? DLB: I began playing in coffee shops around southwest Missouri in 2009. I needed material to play so I began writ- ing tunes — many of which are on my new album. The coffee shops were a great venue for a solo act like me. I like play- ing with other musicians, but there is a certain freedom and vulnerability that can only be produced by playing by yourself. This year I recorded my debut album which will be released Aug 31 of this year. Very excited about that. UCW: How would you define your music? DLB: The eight-track album is a collection of personal confessions put to song, with stirring lyrics and calming melodies which touch on spirituality, hope, forgiveness, fatherhood and love. My unique finger-style approach to guitar play- ing and hushed, restrained vocals give my music a sound all its own, while simultane- ously recalling artists such as Iron and Wine, William Fitzsimmons and David Gray. UCW: Who are your favorite bands/influences on your music? DLB: Iron and Wine, Mumford and Sons, Death Cab For Cutie, William Fitzsimmons UCW: Do you write your own music and where does that inspiration come from? DLB:Yes, I write all the lyrics (my wife did co-write one of them with me). Inspiration comes from life. Everything I see. Everything I experience. The fierce love that I have for my wife, the joys of being a father, the peace and hope that I find in God, the music of other musicians, times of fear and pain, personal bouts of depression, injustice in the world; these topics and more inspire me to write. UCW: If you only had two words to describe your music what would they be? DLB: Folk. Untethered UCW: What are your hopes/goals for the future? DLB: The whole reason that I'm recording this album is to raise money to spread hope, peace and compassion all over the world. All the proceeds from the album and most of the proceeds from the merchandise are being donated to two organizations Project Red Light Rescue works to help abolish the child sex-trade market that has been flourishing in parts of India and Asia. While Gospel for Asia is a charity that sends missionaries to countries desperate for the hope and love that can be found in God's teachings. So, I guess the goal is to raise as much money as possible. UCW: Where do you see yourself five years, 10 years from now? DLB: I have no idea what the future holds, it's in God's hand. But, I would like to have four or five albums under my belt and have held huge benefit concerts and raised millions for the good of humanity. UCW: Where can Fayetteville music lovers check you in the near future? DLB: Just now starting to get into the Fayetteville music scene, but I will be at the Sandhills Music Center on Sept. 2, from 7-9 p.m. I would love to play at restaurants, coffee shops, bars, churches or anywhere really. All booking inqui- ries should be sent to Contact@derekleebishop.com. Upcoming shows will be posted on Facebook, Twitter and ReverbNation.
