ByDavidPollak BayAreaNewsGroup UNIONDALE, N.Y. The Sharks weren't getting too excited over their three-game winning streak to open the season. They knew there areas that needed improve- ment. So maybe it's fitting that no- body was getting too alarmed Thursday night when that streak ended with a 4-3 shootout loss to an undefeated New York Is- landers team in a game where San Jose was outshot 45-23, showed resiliency, but still came up short. "You take the point but there's still a lot to work on for our team," Logan Couture said, echoing the tone of comments made after the wins. "We're still a long way from where we want to be." The deciding goals came in the shootout from Islander forward Kyle Okposo and John Tavares as Couture was the only Shark to score in five rounds. Brent Burns, Patrick Marleau and Tomas Hertl provided the scoring in regulation for San Jose, but it was Alex Stalock with 42 saves that had kept the Sharks in this one even though he gave up goals to Nick Leddy, Okposo and Josh Bailey. The Islanders defeated the Sharks 4-3. By Jerry McDonald Bay Area News Group ALAMEDA Darren McFadden has never felt this good in mid-Octo- ber. The only thing that hurts — and it hurts a lot — is the Raid- ers' 0-5 record. But a roll call of McFadden maladies throughout his seven-year career is devoid of aches and pains. No sign of turf toe or an aching shoulder. Two strong knees. Ham- strings are good. His locker is ab- sent of shoe inserts to deal with Lisfranc sprains. "It may not show in the stats, but this is the best I've felt five games into the season," McFad- den said Thursday. "I don't have any nagging injuries, nicks or anything slowing me down. I feel like I can go out there and let it loose 100 percent." After four games of running hard and getting nowhere, Mc- Fadden showed flashes of his form in 2010 and 2011, when he was among the NFL's most pro- ductive backs. He had 80 yards on 14 carries in a 31-28 loss to San Di- ego, with two rushes for 11 yards negated by penalties. Only once was he thrown for a loss. Corning played the game in a new formation, going to five forwards. "We needed opportunities that we could capitalize on. More shots were taken," coach Teresa Lamb said. The shot that turned out to matter came from Armstrong on a hard drive that bounced off the Yuba City goalie and in for the game's only score. Sarah Boone and Kate Pich- Arndt split time in goalie for Corning. Each made a save. Armstrong led Corning with four shots. Maricruz O'Campo, Ally Suppan, Grace Mora and Koby Rezendes each had two shots. Alexis Corona had a strong defensive game for Corning. LOCAL PAGE 2 By Alex Pavlovic Bay Area News Group SAN FRANCISCO From the first day of spring training, the Giants quietly joked about the fact that this is an even year, so of course they would repre- sent the National League in the World Series. On Thursday, that became a reality. Travis Ishikawa's three-run walk-off homer put the Gi- ants back in the World Series for the third time in five sea- sons. With one out and two on in the ninth inning of a game the Giants trailed throughout, Ishikawa blasted a pitch into the right field arcade section, ending the NLCS in five games. The Giants poured out of the dugout, so eager to celebrate that Ishikawa had to weave around teammates just to get to the plate as fireworks went off behind him. Pablo Sandoval led off the bottom of the ninth with a sin- gle to right off Michael Wacha and was replaced by the speed- ier Joaquin Arias. A one-out walk of Brandon Belt moved the winning run to second, and Ishikawa followed with the biggest hit of a career that nearly ended earlier this sea- son when the Pittsburgh Pi- rates designated him for as- signment.
