The EPA said Wednesday that it will allow the use of a 2,4-D weed killer called Enlist Duo, a new version of the popular herbicide used since the 1940s. It is designed to be used with genetically modified corn and soybeans approved by the Agriculture Depart- ment last month. The seeds are engineered to resist the herbicide, so farmers can spray the fields after the plants emerge and kill the weeds while leaving crops unharmed. The agriculture industry hasanxiouslyawaitedtheap- provals, as many weeds have become resistant to glypho- sate, an herbicide commonly used on genetically modified corn and soybeans now. En- list includes acombinationof both the new version of 2,4-D and glyphosate. Critics say they're con- cerned the increased use of 2,4-D could endanger pub- lic health and more study on the chemical is needed. The USDA has predicted that the useof2,4-Dcouldincreaseby an estimated 200 percent to 600percentbytheyear2020. The EPA said in a release that the agency's decision reflects a large body of sci- ence and that officials used "highly conservative and protective assumptions to evaluate human health and ecological risks." The EPA said the herbicide meets safety standards for the public, agricultural work- ers and endangered species. 2,4-D is now used on other crops, including wheat, and on pastures and home lawns. It is the world's most popular herbicide and the third most popular in the United States, behind atrazine and glyphosate. CORN, SOYBEANS Weed killer OK'd for engineered crops By Travis Lolller The Associated Press NASHVILLE, TENN. — The killer of Grand Ole Opry and "Hee Haw" comic Da- vid "Stringbean" Akeman and his wife Estelle was granted parole Wednesday after 40 years in prison. John A. Brown, 64, was originally sentenced to 198 years, and the board has denied several previous pa- role requests. His latest request came in April. Brown told the board then that he was truly sorry for what he had done. "I can't undo anything to change my past. I've com- mitted the last 40 years to changing my life," he said. On the evening of Nov. 11, 1973, Brown and his cousin, Doug Marvin Brown, ransacked the Ake- mans' cabin on their farm near Nashville, looking for the cash Akeman was ru- mored to keep there. Police said the cous- ins were surprised by the Akemans as they returned home from the Opry. John Brown shot Stringbean Akeman as he walked into the cabin, then ran after his wife in the yard before shooting her in the back of the head. The bodies were found the next day by fellow Opry performer Grandpa Jones, a close friend who lived nearby. Although police said the motive for the slayings was robbery, the Browns took only a chain saw and some guns. Not until 1996 did police find the cash the Browns were seeking, con- cealed in the walls of the Akeman home. The cousins were each given two life sentences. Doug Brown died in prison in 2003. Akeman, a Kentucky na- tive, played banjo with Bill Monroe's band before go- ing solo in the 1950s. He was best known for a folksy comedy-music act he per- formed on the Grand Ole Opry and the "Hee Haw" television show.
