On Saturday, Tommy Russell, 53, went to a leased pasture where he keeps 44 head of cattle and found the thieves had cut a gate lock and stolen his trailer and some cat- tle. "Two trucks and a trailer came in, and two trucks and two trailers left," Russell told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "You could see where they put up temporary fenc- ing. I have no idea how many cows they got." Russell had gone to get his trailer to pick up a horse and cow he had bought at an auction. He was 77 years old. Harlan joined his brothers Eldon, Wendell and Homer in the family rice farming business, and over the next 50 years they transformed their parents' small rice farm into the nation's largest producer of organic rice. Harlan was particularly interested in developing new rice vari- eties in the company's nursery, and over the years developed numer- ous specialty rice vari- eties. He was instrumen- tal in the development and launch of rice-based products bearing the family's brand name, including rice cakes. Harlan and Carolyn Lundberg were married for more than 50 years. In addition to their three sons, Mark, Bryce, and Eric, Harlan had eight grandchildren and, with his wife, was a foster parent to dozens of chil- dren. Active in a variety of industry and community activities, Harlan Lund- berg served on numerous rice industry boards, dabbled in local politics — including an unsuc- cessful 1983 run for the Democratic nomination to the U.S. House of Representative — and supported a wide variety of community and church-related programs and causes.
