The event is considered to be one of the premier swim meets in the United States, bringing together some of the fastest swim- mers in the country. Teams from as far away as Mexico and China competed in the five day event, which was streamed nationally on swimming- world.com. More than 1,200 swimmers qualified for the meet. The stringent time standards allow for only swimmers with extremely fast times to com- pete. Rider was the only 10-and-under boy to qualify north of Sacramento. He qualified in seven events and earned a sixth place finish in his 100 meter backstroke. "Just making the finals was awesome," Rider said. "Those are some of the fastest kids from the best swim programs in the country." Rider, who swims for Sun Oaks Aquatics Racing, said he is lucky to have a coach like Randy Teeters in this area. "The coach makes all the difference. I did- n't feel like those kids from the big swim programs had any advantage in the coaching they got." Rider hopes to be back to the Far Western Event in 2013, this time bringing more of his teammates with him. "Our team is just getting started," said Rider. "They better look out." Lincecum pays for 1 mistake, Giants lose ATLANTA (AP) — Tim Lincecum was trying to get the pitch inside. It drifted back over the plate. That one mistake was enough to send the World Series champion San Fran- cisco Giants to another tough loss. Mike Minor pitched six crisp innings and Chipper Jones homered off Lince- cum for the only run, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 1-0 victory Thursday night. The Giants lost three of four in the series, dropping six games behind Atlanta in the wild-card race. They came into the night 2 1/2 behind Arizona in the NL West. ''We've just got to find our luck,'' Lincecum said. ''We've got to find it soon.'' Battered by injuries, San Francisco has lost 14 of its last 20 games. The four-game set against the Braves was simi- lar in style to the thrilling NL division series between the teams last fall. San Francisco knocked off Atlanta 3-1 in the playoffs, with every game decided by one run. This time, the Braves had the edge, the four games decid- ed by a total of five runs.
