'Jane the Virgin' cuts to the chaste By Jacqueline Cutler © Zap2it Given the title and the focus on an actual preg- nant virgin, it's understand- able that some will assume The CW's delightful show, premiering Monday, Oct. 13, is sacrilegious. Rather, Jane (Gina Ro- driguez) is a chaste young woman. She and her boyfriend are waiting for marriage, and she lives by her grandmother's lesson about abstinence. "She is studying to be a teacher and has dreams of being a writer but works as a mermaid," Rodriguez says during an interview in Beverly Hills, Calif. At her annual gyne- cological exam, Jane assumes she is getting a pap smear. A doctor, who isn't her regular physician, thinks Jane is someone else and artificially insemi- nates her. Jane gets preg- nant instantly. Now Jane is still a virgin — albeit a pregnant one. The show treats this is- sue seriously, yet there's humor in the tone and characters. Jane never wanted to emulate her mother and grandmother, both young mothers. The doctor's office fig- ures out what happened, but the situation is even more complicated than first appears. The man whose sperm was used is now sterile because of an ill- ness. He and his wife, not Based on a Venezuelan telenovela, showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman decided the main character had to have a strong moral code. "When this show was brought to me, it became very specific in terms of who this woman is, what the specific relationship that she has to her mother, who had her at 16, and how that would inform her decision, and how she's growing up with her grandmother who is religious," Urman says at a press conference. "So all of that does kind of create a character who I wanted to be very moral, and whatever decision you have, you can be moral, but she's coming from a very specific set of circumstances. And I want you to feel that in the character going forward." Jane is Latina, and the grandmother sometimes speaks Spanish. Rodriguez notes that the story is universal. This situation could, conceivably, happen to any woman. "They are strong women and every culture has them," Rodriguez says. Jane could have an abortion, "but all we know is she will keep the baby," she says. "She wants her plan to keep going." With her grandmother and mom's support, Jane will keep that plan going, and keep it real. Unlike much on TV, Rodriguez says, "We are not vampires. We are not wolves. And it is a real story." Gina Rodriguez stars in "Jane the Virgin," premiering Monday on The CW. the nicest woman, des- perately want a baby. The embryo Jane is carrying is their only hope. Understandably, Jane's fiance is less than thrilled with the predicament. The series is set up to follow Jane's relationships with her mom, grandmother, the couple trying to conceive, and fiance. 2 The Goshen News • TV Spotlight • October 13 - 19, 2014 KARAOKE!!!
