The ball came off Pence's broken bat three times on a single swing and changed direction for a key two- run double in a 9-0 victory against St. Louis in the Game 7 NL Championship Series clincher. These days, with another NLCS matchup against the Cardinals on deck, Pence isn't getting pensive. "Everything that's hap- pened in the past, it's done, it's history," he said. "So, this is a new and separate experience in and of itself. It's a tremendous honor and a privilege to take the field with these guys." Pence is as reliable for his antics and what manager Bruce Bochy has called a "unique style of hitting" as he is for being written into the lineup each day. After Pence played every game in 2013 in his first full season with the Giants and earned himself a new $90 million, five-year contract, Bochy spoke of possibly giv- ing him a rest on occasion. But he wasn't held out of the starting lineup until Game 161, and still played in all 162. Pence has appeared in 383 consecutive games. With his unruly curly hair pulled back by a black headband or tucked into his "LINCECUM KNOWS" cap, the 31-year-old Pence earned his third All-Star nod this year. He batted .277 with 20 home runs and 74 RBIs. A health nut who feasts on kale salad and raw veg- gies, Pence helped inspire an edible garden behind the center-field fence that's be- lieved to be the first of its kind in pro sports. Pence took the high road in May when his beloved custom motor scooter — his transportation to and from games — went miss- ing. He got it back after an- nouncing there would be no hard feelings and prom- ising to gift a signed bobble- head (of him on the scooter, of course) as a reward if his ride was returned. Pence often gathers his teammates together to let them know how proud he is to be part of this group for another special October. When the Giants sealed a spot in the NL wild-card game, Pence provided an expletive-filled speech — he later apologized for the salty language getting aired — congratulating the Giants for hanging in through the injuries, doubts and skids. He also asked the home fans if they wanted another game by the bay, receiving a resounding "YES! YES! YES!" That has become the club's postseason mantra. "Any player will say that there's no accomplishment greater than what you do as a team in the postseason," Pence said. "It's an honor to play for this city, these guys." The surprising Kan- sas City Royals and un- flappable Baltimore Ori- oles are extremely similar with one significant excep- tion: the fashion in which they score runs. The team that best utilizes its stan- dard method of offense will likely win the best-of-seven AL Championship Series, which begins tonight. Get ready for small ball versus long ball. Back in April, few could have predicted these two teams would be the last standing in the Ameri- can League. But the fash- ion in which they got here — with stunningly easy sweeps in the Division Se- ries — makes this matchup intriguing. Even more interesting is their contrasting styles. The Royals love to take an extra base, whether it's turning a single into a dou- ble or stealing their way into scoring position. Kan- sas City led the majors with 153 stolen bases during the regular season then, with blazing-fast rookie Ter- rance Gore, added seven in a wild-card win over Oakland and five more in a three-game wipeout of the top-seeded Los Ange- les Angels. "Speed. That's what we do," designated hitter Billy Butler said. "Obviously you have to be smart about it, but we're a very aggres- sive team. When our speed guys get on they like to go. That's what got us to this point — that, and pitching and defense." The Orioles, like the Roy- als, feature a solid starting rotation, an effective bull- pen and strong defense. But Baltimore prefers to take a more leisurely trip around the bases. Although Baltimore finished dead last in the majors with 44 stolen bases, it led the majors with 211 home runs. Nel- son Cruz had 40 of them, only 55 fewer than the Royals hit while finishing last in the big leagues as the only team that didn't hit 100. And so, the lines are drawn. Whichever pitching staff can stifle the opposi- tion's preferred method of offense will likely be work- ing in the World Series. "Obviously, we'll be asked to keep the Orioles in check in terms of their power and the big inning," said Royals right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, who pitched for Baltimore from 2007-11. "On the flip side, the Orioles pitchers will be asked to try and keep our guys off base and not allow us to string together a cou- ple of hits to get us runs." It's really that simple. "The best way to keep them from stealing is to keep them off the bases. That's our first goal," Bal- timore reliever Tommy Hunter said. "I'm not too worried about it. You know they're fast, you know they run. Hopefully they run into outs." That doesn't mean Kan- sas City can't go deep, or the Orioles are unable to run. It's just that each team has adopted the style best suited for its own stadium. "The Royals can hit home runs. They just play in a big ballpark," Balti- more center fielder Adam Jones said. "They've got guys who can drive the ball, and we've also got guys who can run. In our ballpark it brings a differ- ent dynamic because it's smaller, in their ballpark, it brings a different dy- namic because it's bigger. But we've got some hairy guys on our team. If we're hitting in the Grand Can- yon, we can still put 'em out." Cruz homered in the Ori- oles' clinching win over De- troit on Sunday, and just a few hours later Eric Hos- mer and Mike Moustakas each contributed a two-run shot in the Royals' 8-3 win over L.A. "Home runs are defi- nitely a difference-maker in the game," Butler said. "That's what we've done in the playoffs. We've had home runs win games, but that hasn't been the way we won games throughout the season. Still, they're good to have when you get them." The pitching matchup today pits Kansas City's James Shields against right-hander Chris Till- man. Shields is 11-7 lifetime against Baltimore, includ- ing 2-0 this season. Shields chose not to ex- plain his success against the Orioles except to say, "It's one of those things, I guess. I feel like I can pitch good against any team on any given day." Kansas City hasn't reached the World Series since 1985, and Baltimore's dry spell runs from 1983.
