"It's the best group (of 49ers receivers) we've faced since I've been here," said St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher, who took over in 2012 and is preparing to host the 49ers on Monday night. Injuries to tight end Ver- non Davis have prompted the 49ers to turn to their wide receivers in times of need. A revitalized running game might have keyed their past two wins, but the passing game proved a pos- itive factor, such as Lloyd's 29-yard catch on the go- ahead drive in Sunday's 22-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers' only touch- down last game: a 9-yard pass from Kaepernick to Johnson. Of the 49ers' 10 touchdowns this season, seven have come on re- ceptions: Johnson, Crab- tree and Davis each have two, and Frank Gore has the other. "The nice thing about that group is they all bring something a little bit differ- ent to the table, and they're all extremely competitive," general manager Trent Baalke said on his weekly radio show. "They all want the football, and unfortu- nately there's only one ball, and you can't make them all happy, week in and week out." Insert: Kaepernick. It's his job to get them that ball, but not just to appease the masses. "It's not about keeping everybody happy. It's about winning," Kaepernick said. "You might have one game where a receiver gets 10 passes or 15 passes, and another game he doesn't get any. If you're winning, it doesn't matter." Boldin and Crabtree each have 25 receptions, and Crabtree dismissed any notion that Sunday's one-catch cameo was re- lated to a left-foot injury. "Nothing wrong with me," said Crabtree, who briefly left a Sept. 28 win to have that foot examined. Of Johnson's 15 recep- tions, seven have come on third down. Lloyd is av- eraging a team-high 18.2 yards per catch on six re- ceptions. Ellington has only a 1-yard catch, but his punt-return duties keep him suited up ahead of Quinton Patton, last year's No. 3 receiver. "Pretty much every game here, they have stepped up when the ball has come to them and made the big play," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "We've had very little dropped balls. They have gotten open and made the big catch. That's been very good for our team." Patton has been inac- tive every game, and when he shared his frustration with Boldin a few weeks ago, he was advised to stay calm and ready. "I've been learning so much since I've been out," said Patton, cit- ing how he's studied tech- niques such as Johnson's release at the line and Lloyd's leaping ability. Lloyd showed that skill on Sunday's acrobatic, game-changing catch. Af- terward, Lloyd said he felt the need to step up in the clutch. "We all felt that way, whether we were rushing the ball or whether it was Crabtree or Boldin or John- son, whoever's number was going to get called." • Davis wore a no-con- tact jersey and practiced for the first time since a back injury knocked him out of a Sept. 28 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. He showed no discomfort hitting a blocking sled as practice began. • Running back Marcus Lattimore (knee) likely will resume practicing Oct. 29, opening a three-week win- dow before the 49ers de- cide whether to activate him off the non-football- injury list. "If we can sim- ulate a good three-week training camp period, and then activate him after that and turn him loose, that would give him the best possible scenario to help the football team and for him to be at his best," Harbaugh said. • Special-teams ace Kas- sim Osgood is expected to "imminently" re-sign, for the third time since Sep- tember, Harbaugh said without elaborating on a corresponding move. Os- good got released Wednes- day to make room for spe- cial teamer Bubba Ventrone. • Cornerback Tramaine Brock (toe), right tackle An- thony Davis (knee) and de- fensive tackle Justin Smith (veteran rest) did not prac- tice. • The 49ers will stay in the same St. Louis hotel as the Giants, who'll face the host Cardinals in the National League Cham- pionship Series on Sat- urday and Sunday. Har- baugh doubts he'll attend an NLCS game, though he's a "big fan" of Giants man- ager Bruce Bochy. Kaepe- rnick said he's watched parts of the Giants playoff games and is a "big fan" of reliever Sergio Romo. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 receivers. "We fixed that at half- time," Tarver said. "If you noticed, in the second half they tried the same play three times and it did not work." By halftime it was too late. The way interim coach Tony Sparano sees it, some of the defensive issues have to do with "Oakland beat- ing Oakland," one of his favorite expressions in the early stages of his tenure. "We've done a bunch of self-analysis, which is hard," Sparano said. "Look- ing at yourself in the mir- ror and saying, 'We didn't do this well enough, we have to be better at this.' Those things are some- times hard to do. A nor- mal person wouldn't do it, where in football, we do it quite often." If it seems as if every quarterback the Raiders face looks like a world- beater it's because they are. In the 36 games un- der Allen and Tarver, op- posing quarterbacks have a 99.9 passer rating with 67 touchdown passes, 22 interceptions and a com- pletion percentage of 67.6. The Raiders have had only one quarterback in franchise history better than 99.9 over a single sea- son — Ken Stabler's 103.4 in 1976. Even Rich Gannon in his MVP year in 2002 was 97.3. The challenge Sunday is Philip Rivers, who leads the NFL with a passer rat- ing of 116.3 with 12 touch- downs against just two interceptions. One of the bright spots in the Allen- Tarver defense was a 27-17 win over the Chargers in Oakland last season when they intercepted Rivers three times. Sparano's mandate to Tarver and the defen- sive staff — accentuate what works, discard what doesn't. "We looked at what we do well and what we don't do quite so well, and we're making decisions based on that," Tarver said. • The Raiders an- nounced the Chargers game is sold out and will be televised locally. • Derek Carr (ankle, knee) was limited in prac- tice, and Sparano remains in a wait-and-see mode re- garding his quarterback. Offensive coordinator Greg Olson fully expects to see Carr on the field. "He'll do whatever he needs to do to get ready," Olson said. Linebacker Sio Moore (ankle) was limited for the second straight day but showed progress, Sparano said. Fullback Marcel Re- ece (quad) was also lim- ited. Tackle Khalif Barnes (quad) and cornerback Keith McGill (groin) did not practice. • The Raiders finished practice seven minutes early because they had to run only two plays over because of errors, Sparano said. Under Sparano, the Raiders will taper prac- tice Thursday and Friday after a heavy Wednesday. The idea is to be more fresh Sundays and start quicker. "It was a good day out there, it was fast," Sparano said. "The players can feel the taper down, I believe that." Raiders FROM PAGE 1 By Kristie Rieken The Associated Press HOUSTON Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts had a great first quarter and did just enough the rest of the way to hold off the Houston Texans 33-28 on Thursday night. The Colts (4-2) raced to a 24-0 lead after one quar- ter, but allowed Houston to cut it to 33-28 early in the fourth quarter on J.J. Watt's fumble return for a touchdown. The Texans (3-3) had two opportunities to take the lead late, but the Colts recovered fumbles by An- dre Johnson and Ryan Fitz- patrick in the last five min- utes. Luck finished with 370 yards passing and a three touchdowns and T.Y. Hilton had a career- high 223 yards receiving with a touchdown to give Indy first place in the AFC South. The Texans were driv- ing with less than five min- utes remaining when John- son, who had been called for pass interference two plays earlier, caught a 13- yard pass and fumbled. Watt knocked down Luck's pass on third down on Indy's next drive to give Houston one last chance. But Bjoern Werner sacked Fitzpatrick and stripped the ball and D'Qwell Jack- son recovered. Fitzpatrick threw for 212 yards and a touchdown and Arian Foster had 109 yards rushing with two scores for Houston. Indianapolis led by 12 when Luck fumbled and Watt recovered it and re- turned it 45 yards for a touchdown. It was Watt's third touchdown this sea- son. He also has scored on an interception return and a reception. Foster had a 34-yard run before Johnson grabbed a 26-yard reception to get Houston down to the 2 in the third quarter.
