Central League - 2nd place McGlynn Lawsharks, Matt McGlynn manager GIANTS Continued from page 1B ailing right elbow checked out. It's noth- ing serious, but Bochy gave Wilson a second night off to rest his arm. The way Cain pitched, it looked like the Giants would be just fine without the bearded one. Then came the ninth. ''We've had a couple heartbreakers at the end the last two nights here,'' Cain said. ''It just seemed like everything accumulated. It was really nice to get everybody relaxed and go out there and have fun, so we can just carry that over into the rest of the week.'' San Francisco jumped ahead in the first on back-to-back doubles by Mike Fontenot and Pablo Sandoval. The Braves tied it up in the bottom half, tak- ing advantage of a miscue by Sandoval at third base. With two runners on and one out, San- doval fielded Dan Uggla's grounder and attempted to tag Bourn running toward third. But Bourn dodged the glove, and Sandoval's throw to first was too late to get Uggla, either. It was the first of three errors by the Giants. Cain struck out Freeman with the bases loaded, but Jones walked to bring home the tying run. RAIDERS Continued from page 1B the procedure but added that he expects Johnson to be back in time for the Raiders' regular-season opener at Denver on Sept. 12. ''Chris will be back here very shortly,'' Jackson said. ''I'm not going to go into detail exactly what it is, but we had to have some things cleaned up with him, for him, and I think he'll be back and on the mend and ready to play.'' Johnson had been work- ing at left cornerback almost exclusively with Oakland's starters but left halfway through Sunday's practice and hasn't been back on the field since. The Raiders' secondary has been a focal point dur- ing training camp ever since Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha signed with Philadelphia as a free agent. Rookie DeMarcus Van Dyke, the team's third- round draft pick who had a rough time in his NFL debut trying to handle Ari- zona's Larry Fitzgerald, replaced Johnson in prac- tice Wednesday. The Raiders also have tried Jurrjens was pitching for the first time since Aug. 1, having gone on the dis- abled list because of a strained right knee. He hasn't been the same dominat- ing pitcher he was before making the All-Star team, giving up at least four runs for the fourth time in his last five starts. That happened only once in his first 16 appearances. ''Right now, I just need to go to the bullpen and get my pitches back,'' Jur- rjens said. ''I've got to get a feel for them again.'' The Giants added to their lead in the ninth with two more sacrifice flies off Scott Linebrink. Sandoval picked up his second RBI and Huff brought home the other run. NOTES: Braves RHP Peter Moylan is scheduled for another bullpen session Thursday as he continues his recovery from back surgery. ... Whiteside left the game in the seventh because of dizziness. He smashed his face into the dirt when thrown out attempting a steal to end the fourth. ... The Giants tied a San Francis- co record with four sacrifice flies, last done in 1988. ... The Giants beat the Braves for the first time in six meetings this season. ... The series finale pits San Francisco's Tim Lincecum (11-9) against Atlanta's Mike Minor (2-2). Lincecum is 6-3 in nine career appearances against the Braves, while Minor will be facing the Giants for the first time. Walter McFadden at the position. ''It's an opportunity to show out, to show the team that I can play,'' Van Dyke said. ''And this is an oppor- tunity to show Coach Hue that I'm ready to play. I've improved a lot, and every day I try to get better at dif- ferent things.'' The loss of Johnson is another blow for Oakland's secondary. Backup safeties Hiram Eugene (dislocated hip) and Zac Etheridge (knee) were both injured in the preseason loss to the Cardi- nals, forcing the Raiders to sign Josh Bullocks and Matt Giordano earlier this week as insurance. The situation with the offensive line could get just as tricky if Satele is out for any length of time. Satele, who had been taking most of the reps with Oakland's first team offense, left practice early then limped cautiously away from the team's train- ing camp facilities. ''I'm good,'' Satele said before getting into a van driven by a team employee to be taken to a hospital for X-rays. Jackson again refused to say how Satele got hurt but didn't think the injury was too serious. ''Nothing major, didn't get rolled on or nothing,'' Jackson said. ''(He) just started feeling a little dis- comfort and we decided to get him out. Just didn't feel some strength in some areas. I really believe he's OK and he'll be fine. We'll do all the precautionary things that you need to do to make sure our players are OK.'' That meant another position change for rookie Stefen Wisniewski, who had been lining up at left guard after originally being drafted to be Oakland's center. Wisniewski has played both positions in training camp but was at left guard only in the exhi- bition opener. Additionally, only two days after Murphy told reporters that he's been slowed by a sore groin and hamstring Jackson said the third-year wide receiver may not be back until after the Raiders' opener in Denver. ''Murphy had a kind of procedure also,'' Jackson said, again declining to discuss details. ''Mur- phy's was a little bit more extensive than Chris, so Murph might be out a little longer than C.J.'' Coed 2 - 2nd place Up In Flames, Lorrie Eller manager Coed 4 - 2nd place PC314,Tahnee Assad manager 49ers sign QB Josh McCown SANTA CLARA (AP) — Josh McCown was keeping busy coaching high school football back in North Car- olina while he waited for the phone to ring, knowing another opportunity might never come. One call from the San Francisco 49ers changed everything. McCown signed a one-year deal for the league minimum of $810,000 on Wednesday to be a backup for the 49ers, giving his career new life and adding a veteran to the quarterback competition. He is expected to compete with rook- ie Colin Kaepernick for the No. 2 spot behind presumed starter Alex Smith. After throwing passes on a high school field for most of the summer, the oppor- tunity to join new coach Jim Harbaugh's team was more than McCown could ever hope for. ''When you're sitting there waiting for the phone to ring, you work out every day, you want something else to do,'' McCown said. ''I'm excited.'' McCown's career has gone through a rapid turnaround. He took an early morning flight from Charlotte to the Bay Area via Chicago, passed a physical, signed his contract and was on the practice field by the afternoon wearing No. 9. McCown clearly has some catching up to do if he wants to make the final roster. He was intercepted twice in limited action in practice, both by Dashon Goldson, although one was on a last-second heave to the end zone The 32-year-old was with the United Football League's Hartford Colonials last year and had no plans to return to professional football for anything less than a NFL job. McCown spent eight seasons in the NFL, including the first four with the Arizona Cardinals. He also played for Detroit, Oakland and Carolina. McCown's best season came in 2004 when he started 13 games for the Cardinals, throwing for 2,511 yards with 11 touchdowns and 10 inter- ceptions. ''I'm a competitior. I love to com- pete,'' McCown said. ''I think the older you get, the more you want to compete. So I'll say that. Whether it's in practice or in a game, I'm looking to compete. And then past that, just looking to get better. As far as the future, tomorrow's not promised.'' The 49ers have been searching for another backup since Harbaugh took over in January. With Smith and Kaepernick taking the majority of snaps, San Francisco still needed a third-string quarterback — and possibly another player to push the com- petition. The Niners worked out Daunte Culpepper earlier this week, and they failed to land a splashier name previous- ly through free agency. McCown's name always had resonat- ed with Harbaugh's staff. McCown played for 49ers quarter- backs coach Geep Chryst, who was an assistant in Arizona and Carolina. McCown is also familiar with the West Coast offense, so the two have been in touch about a possible reunion since Jan- uary. Harbaugh and Chryst were in team meetings and not made available for comment. ''I don't care what stage of your career you're in, you always want to get better,'' McCown said. ''So for me to be around coach Harbaugh, to see the way he coaches quarterbacks, a guy who has played that position and played it at a high level, it's exciting. It's neat just to see him coach the other guys and I'm appreciative just to be out here.''
