ACT deems more students college-ready WASHINGTON (MCT) — The proportion of American stu- dents meeting all four of the ACT's college-readiness bench- marks continued to rise this year, driven largely by improvements in performance on the mathemat- ics and science portions of the exam, according to data released Wednesday. The annual report from ACT examines the scores of students in the 2011 graduating class who took that college-entrance exam at some point in high school. This year's report shows that 25 per- cent of those students produced scores in English, reading, math, and science that correlate with higher chances of earning Bs or Cs in entry-level college courses. That figure has grown steadily in recent years; it was 21 percent in 2005. Much of the growth was the result of improvements on the math and science portions of the exam. In each of those areas, the proportion of students meeting the college-readiness bench- marks has risen 2 percentage points in the last five years. The flip side of the good news, however, was also clear: Three- quarters of U.S. students fall short of the ACT's definition of being prepared for a university education in all four subjects. And while two-thirds met the mark in English and half did in reading, those numbers are falling or flatlining, not rising. Even the math and science scores, while rising, show a long road ahead: More than half the students who took the ACT fell short of the college-readiness benchmark in math, and an aver- age of seven in 10 fell short of it in science. "We are optimistic that there is growth happening in the continu- al increase, even a tick at a time, in the overall college readiness of students. It's a great sign, espe- cially as the population (of ACT test-takers) gets more diverse and larger," said Jon L. Erickson, the ACT's senior vice president for educational services. "But I'll temper that by saying we need to accelerate the pace. It will take us too long at a tick at a time." Erickson credited a national focus on career- and college- readiness, and on the importance of science, technology, engineer- ing, and math — the so-called STEM fields — for some of the improvement in ACT scores. More students, nearly three-quar- ters, are also taking what the Iowa City, Iowa-based company calls a "core curriculum": four years of English and three each of social studies, science and math. Students who take such a course sequence do better on the corresponding exams, Erickson noted. Those who take three years of math, for instance, are nearly six times more likely to meet the college-readiness benchmark in that subject as those who don't, according to ACT data. But tak- ing a core curriculum is no guar- antee of stellar exam perfor- Abercrombie asks 'The Situation' to shop elsewhere NEW YORK (AP) — The Situation doesn't usually require a lot of motivation to lose the shirt. But Abercrombie & Fitch wants him to go one further — the company has offered to pay ''Jersey Shore'' cast members to stop wearing clothes carrying their brand. The preppy teen retailer said Tuesday it would pay a ''substantial pay- ment'' to Mike ''The Situation'' Sorrentino or any cast member who stops wearing its clothing on the popular MTV reality show because the series is ''contrary to the aspirational nature of the brand.'' ''We are deeply concerned that Mr. Sorrentino's association with our brand could cause significant damage to our image,'' the retailer said in a press release. It may seem strange that a brand that employs half-naked models to stand outside its flagship stores and courted controversy with racy cata- logs has come out with such an aggressive campaign against the hard partying cast of ''Jersey Shore.'' But the audacious approach is getting the teen retailer tons of publicity during the crucial back-to-school sea- son, the second biggest shopping period of the year. The CEO says it's having fun with the ploy, and marketing experts say the company may wind up laughing all the way to the bank. ''It gets their name further out into the marketplace with one of the hottest brands on TV right now at the peak of the back-to-school sea- son,'' said Wall Street Strategies analyst Brian Sozzi. ''It's free market- ing. Because the approach is so ridiculous, everybody's talking about it.'' Brands usually embrace celebrities or performers who adopt their products in an unsolicited, organic way because of all the attention it can drum up. But sometimes they can have an uneasy relationship. When hip hop stars unofficially adopted luxury champagne Cristal as their drink of choice several years ago, for example, the relationship seemed cozy at first. But after a company executive made derogatory comments about hip hop culture, high profile rappers like Jay-Z boy- cotted it. Still, unexpected adaptation can be beneficial. When an urban audi- ence adopted ultra-preppy Tommy Hilfiger clothes, the brand ended up expanding massively. And now Tommy Hilfiger's son even is a rapper. The cast of ''Jersey Shore'' don't exactly consist of the kind of role models most brands covet. Now filming its fifth season, the show has won millions of viewers who tune in to watch a group of hard-partying, foul-mouthed 20- and 30-somethings hanging out, hooking up and behaving raucously. Mike ''The Situation'' Sorrentino is one of the most popular, and outrageous, cast members, boasting of a ''gym-tan-laun- dry'' routine and lifting his shirt to show off his abs at every opportuni- ty. CEO Mike Jeffries said the offer to pay cast members came about when someone alerted him Sorrentino was wearing Abercrombie & Fitch on the show. In an Aug. 11 episode, Sorrentino wears neon green AF-label sweat pants. Abercrombie has not disclosed the offering price. But Jeffries struck a light tone about the offer. ''We are having a lot of fun with it,'' he said in a conference call with analysts Wednesday. MTV called the move a ''clever PR stunt'' by Abercrombie. ''We'd love to work with them on other ways they can leverage 'Jersey Shore' to reach the largest youth audience on television,'' the network said Wednesday in a statement. Analysts say while Abercrombie's provocative move suggests a pub- licity ploy, the teen retailer does have an image to protect. Laura Ries, president of the Atlanta marketing consultancy Ries & Ries said the image is ''classic, sexy, preppy teenagers.'' mance, either, a possible reflec- tion of the widely recognized variation in course content and rigor. Only one-third of the stu- dents who took three years of science met the science bench- mark. Students from minority ethnic and racial groups are taking the ACT in increasing numbers, according to the data. That trend could suggest greater college awareness among minority stu- dents, or it could reflect the racial and ethnic composition of states that are using the ACT more widely.
