F A L L 2 0 1 4 | NORTH BAY WOMAN 53 Don't fear it; do it Miriam Karell of Renaissance Marin said that over-thinking their fears and doubts keeps many women (and men) from starting their own businesses. She says it is important to push fear aside and focus on getting the support you need to overcome the obstacles and to supplement your own skills. She provided this list from a 2014 Weebly Wakefield Survey as to why people fail to act on their ideas, such as for new businesses: 66% Lack of money 49% Didn't know what to do first 21% Didn't think idea was good enough 21% Didn't have the time 20% Fear of failing Marin SBDC can be reached at 415 755-1123 or Google Renaissance Marin online. banking, Kaselionis and her associates lend technical assistance, guidance and devel- op fundable business plans with a level of accountability that is often lacking. "This is a hybrid funding model so more financial institutions will say 'yes' more often to start-up and expanding businesses, [even] in a regulatory environment where they historically would have said 'no'," she explains. From May to September this year, Kaselionis' new venture garnered seven business clients, one of which is partially woman-owned. Her clients pay for seminars, loan packaging and introductions to financial institutions; the firm earns broker/dealer fees, as well. Long-term, she wants to have a role in encouraging most or all Bay Area com- munity banks to see the benefits and begin allocating a portion of their funding portfolio to small business economic development. ■ > FUNDING from page 37 Kim Kaselionis at the Breakaway Funding office in Sausalito.
