ByAndreByik abyik@redbluffdailynews.com @andrebyik on Twitter CORNING The Orland Trojans varsity football team took ad- vantage of the few opportunities it had against their rivals in the Corning Cardinals on Friday, earning a 21-7 road win and sus- taining its unblemished record. The Trojans (5-0) quickly struck in the first quarter, jump- ing to a 7-0 lead after quarter- back James Wiseman ran in a 22-yard touchdown to cap a seven-play dive on his team's first possession. The Trojans leaned heavily on Wiseman and running back Arthur Flynn throughout a largely quiet offen- sive night for the two teams. The Cards (3-2) tied the game through the air late in the first quarter after quarterback Wyatt Haydon hooked up with Chance Nelson for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Corning, a historically run-first and sometimes run- only team, would test Haydon's arm throughout the night with mixed results as Orland's defen- sive linemen enjoyed a clear size advantage on Corning. With about six minutes left in the third quarter the Trojans capped a 12-play march down field with a 3-yard TD run from Wiseman, who earlier in the possession hooked up with Fer- min Ortega on third down for a big 32-yard gain to the Corn- ing 22. Down 13-7, Corning was mere inches from tying the game, and, perhaps, taking the lead late in the third quarter after Joseph Aguirre scooped up an Orland fumble at the Trojans' 36-yard line. Haydon immediately con- nected with Nelson down the left sideline for a 35-yard gain, but with a yard to go, Orland staged the defensive stand of the night. Two Corning rushing plays failed to move the ball into the end zone, and a bad snap on third down forced the Cards back to the Orland 13. Haydon would throw an incomplete pass into the end zone, and Orland would take over on downs to the delight of those who made the short drive to Corning High School. The Trojans sealed their win with a 19-yard TD pass from Wiseman to Jose-Luiz Ruiz- Parra with about 2:24 left to play. It was a painful loss for the Spartans who dropped to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the Eastern Athletic League and will likely be heavy underdogs the rest of the schedule. Shasta led 14-0 at halftime be- hind touchdown runs by Kyle Cat- anese and Justin Helleyer. Red Bluff opened the second half with the ball but on their first play they were picked off by Bai- ley Ramirez. Shasta handed the ball to Alex Schneider on its ensuing play and he broke 14 yards for a touchdown and a 21-0 Shasta lead. The Spartans finally got a spark a couple of drives later when Dan- iel Koenig picked off Catanese and ran the ball back to Shasta's 8. Two plays later Red Bluff quar- terback Walker Dodero kept it himself to pull the game to 21-7. A holding call and unsports- manlike penalty on the ensuing extra point, both called against Shasta gave Red Bluff the rare opportunity to kick off from the Wolves' 30-yard-line. But as a sign of the night Red Bluff's onside kick attempt was ac- tually kicked backwards five yards. A few minutes later Red Bluff appeared to pull within a touch- down, but a holding call brought HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Shasta rolls Red Bluff in second half for 42-7 win FOOTBALL PAGE 2 By Janie Mccauley The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO Doug Fister pitched seven shutout innings and the Nationals capitalized on Bumgarner's one off-target throw, staving off elimination in the NL Division Series with a 4-1 win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday. Fister dazzled again in San Francisco, helping the Nation- als cut their deficit to 2-1 in the best-of-five series. They ended the Giants 10-game postseason winning streak that started with Game 5 of the 2012 NL Champi- onship Series against St. Louis. Washington scored two runs on Bumgarner's throwing error in the seventh inning to end the ace's 21-inning scoreless streak. Harper punctuated the victory with a solo homer in the ninth. "Really it came down to every pitch," Fister said. "Fortunately a ball bounced our way." Drew Storen allowed to the first two batters to reach in the bottom of the ninth but shook off his postseason struggles, al- lowing a run in closing it out as Washington forced a Game 4 on Tuesday night. Now, the 96-win Nationals will send left-hander Gio Gon- zalez up against San Francisco right-hander Ryan Vogelsong. "We just needed one break," Storen said. "It's been a tough couple innings here to start and we got our break. It's just a mat- ter of building on it, and we live to see another day." On a day Bumgarner had been nearly untouchable, his own miscue prevented a three- game sweep. Bumgarner fielded Wilson Ramos' two-strike sacrifice bunt between the mound and the first-base line and fired to third rather than going for the sure out at first. "We probably should have taken the out of first. I made a mistake telling him to throw to third," catcher Buster Posey said. "It happens. We'll come tomorrow, go through the pre- game routine and be ready to go." Bumgarner's throw sailed wide of Pablo Sandoval's out- stretched glove and bounced all the way to the tarp along the left-field wall before rolling over the bullpen mounds where two relievers were warming up. Sandoval nearly did the splits trying to make the play and stayed down in pain as the two runs scored. Trainers checked on the third baseman and he remained in the game. "We don't have Ramos bunt with two strikes," Harper said. "So if we don't have him get that NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION PLAYOFFS Bum's throw helps Nationals beat Giants Pitcher's error scores two runs in seventh BEN MARGOT — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner (40) makes a throw to third for an error that scored two runs in the seventh inning against the Washington Nationals during Game 3of baseball's NL Division Series.
