Particularly after his acclaimed, Emmy-nomi- nated work in the HBO movie "The Normal Heart," star Matt Bomer isn't likely to be lacking for other work. His appearance in the sequel to "Magic Mike" is a real possibility, and he's also been signed for the lead role in a planned biography of actor Montgomery Clift. Q : I noticed that ABC and CBS both had specials the night of the Oscar Pistorius verdict, but NBC didn't. Why was that? — Joan Shawn, Grand Junction, Colo. A : Actually, NBC did, but it just wasn't offered in the traditional way. The network already had a two- hour "Dateline NBC" ready to air that night, so it produced a full-length program on the trial and verdict exclusively for the Internet, where it was presented on the "Dateline NBC" website ... a first for NBC News, and very possibly not the last under such circumstances. CBS turned around an extra "48 Hours" to cover the story, and ABC folded its report — largely consisting of an interview with a former Pisto- rius girlfriend, who also appeared on the CBS program — into that evening's "20/20" broadcast. Q : What is the status of the fourth season of "Longmire"? — Bruce Weise, via e-mail A : Nonexistent as of this writ- ing, but that doesn't mean the show's studio isn't trying to place it elsewhere after its cancellation — though it was A&E Network's highest-rated scripted series to date. Fans have been quite vocal in their disappointment about the axing (and we can vouch for that from the mail we've received on it), and that's undoubtedly valuable fuel as Warner Horizon Television makes the rounds of cable and online networks to try to secure a future for "Longmire" elsewhere. Q : Why isn't "The Sound of Music" aired more than once a year? — Robert Browne, via e-mail A : That's the current deal ABC has with 20th Century Fox Tele- vision, which retains the rights to it. There actually have been years when it was shown more than once — ABC Family has had it for Easter telecasts — and AMC also had it, briefly, a while back. It's interesting to note that its ABC broadcast last December scored the film's highest ratings since 2007. In some corners, that's attributed to NBC (which had been the TV home of the movie for more than 20 years) having offered the live, Carrie Underwood-starring pro- duction of the stage show a couple of weeks earlier.
