First baseman Adam LaRoche joked the Giants' "confidence is up" because of their win against the Pi- rates, "but we just had a big intrasquad yesterday, so our confidence is up, too." Both teams worked out at Nationals Park on Thurs- day, and both managers announced their starting pitchers for Games 1-3. Today's matchup be- tween Washington's Ste- phen Strasburg and San Francisco's Jake Peavy — pals who sometimes work out together in San Diego — gives one indication of the gap in experience the series represents. Stras- burg, held out of the 2012 postseason to protect his surgically repaired elbow, will be making his playoff debut; Peavy will be mak- ing his sixth October start, including as a member of last season's World Series champion Boston Red Sox. Their catchers also il- lustrate the difference be- tween the teams: Stras- burg will be throwing to Wilson Ramos, who was injured in 2012 and never has participated in a play- off game; Peavy will work with Buster Posey, a mem- ber of the Giants' 2010 and 2012 title teams, along with the 2012 NL MVP winner. Game 2 will feature Jor- dan Zimmermann against Tim Hudson, and Game 3 will have Doug Fister against Madison Bumgar- ner, who threw a four-hit shutout against Pittsburgh in San Francisco's seventh consecutive victory in an elimination game. "Once we get to the post- season, it's like a new sea- son for us," said Giants shortstop Brandon Craw- ford, who hit a grand slam Wednesday. "We have plenty of ups and downs during the regular season, but now it's kind of a new slate for us." The Giants finished sec- ond in the NL West at 88- 74 after going only 41-40 in the second half. Wash- ington went 53-28 in that span, and a majors-best 21-9 in its last 30, to finish 96-66, the NL's best record. "We may not match up with a lot of people on pa- per," Hudson said. "But I think once you get out there and play, the guts and the heart that this team has ... gets this team over the hump a lot of times." What the Nationals in- sisted Thursday is that their trip to the playoffs in 2012 — which ended with a gut-punch loss in Game 5 of their NLDS against St. Louis — provided plenty of know-how. "We kind of know what to expect a little bit more now," said Ryan Zimmer- man, whose injured right leg seemed fine Thursday as he put in work in left field. "We went into '12 not really knowing what to expect and thinking that everything would be the same. And it's not the same. ... Every pitch is so much more intense. It's just a different feel." Something the Giants know well. Giants FROM PAGE 1 By David Ginsburg The Associated Press BALTIMORE The way Nel- son Cruz and the Baltimore Orioles are hitting this season, it may not matter much who pitches for the other guys. Cruz and J.J. Hardy homered, and the Orioles hammered out 12 hits in defeating Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers 12-3 Thursday in the opener of their AL Division Series. Jonathan Schoop and Alejandro De Aza each had two hits and two RBIs for the Orioles, who turned a close game into a rout with an eight-run eighth inning against Scherzer and three ineffective relievers. The 12 runs set a post- season record for Balti- more, making its second playoff appearance since 1997. Game 2 of the best- of-five series is Friday at Camden Yards. Justin Ver- lander, the second of three straight Cy Young winners the Orioles will face, is set to go against left-hander Wei-Yin Chen. Verlander must avoid the mistakes made by Scher- zer, who allowed five runs and seven hits in 7 1-3 in- nings. The right-hander was 18-5 during the regu- lar season, but in this one he was burned by the long ball and outpitched by the Orioles. "I just left too many pitches up," Scherzer said. "This is a great-hitting ballclub. You give them a chance to extend their arms, they can really hit it. I've got to find a way to get the ball down. I wasn't quite able to do that to- night, and I paid for it." Cruz led the majors with 40 homers during the reg- ular season, a good por- tion of Baltimore's big league-best 211 long balls. His first-inning drive off Scherzer put the Orioles up 2-0 before Detroit's Victor Martinez and J.D. Marti- nez connected off winner Chris Tillman in the sec- ond to tie it. But Baltimore had too much firepower for the Ti- gers. Hardy homered lead- ing off the seventh for a 4-2 lead, and Cruz added his third RBI with a sin- gle during a wild eighth inning keyed by a Detroit error that kept the boister- ous, orange-clad crowd of 47,842 on its feet. "The one that stings is that J.J. Hardy home run," Scherzer said. "That home run really changed the game in my eyes, gave them that insurance run. It was too good of a pitch."
