14 | October • 2014 nectar over the melted butter, devour a whole stack, and then ask who was driv- ing you home while posing for a selfie with Santa himself. ere are quite a few local vintners whose products I wholly endorse, but in thinking about it further, I hesitate to name them. I am not certain that they are completely up to date in paying their alcohol tax and I do not wish to inadvertently limit my access to their product. You get the point, however, I doubt CityView assigned me a story on "Food and Wine" with prior knowledge of my personal dogma of it only being road- kill if you leave it there. Hopefully, we are far enough along that we can stay together. I remember, in the miserably lonely days before my dear Susie, mak- ing an effort to woo some new acquaint- ance with a pick-up truck tour of the countryside. We cruised past a healthy ditch bank next to a field of soybeans. In an unfortunate display of timing, a wild covey of quail rose from the dog fennel and winged across the black top. I hit the slowest one. en, I lamented to the young lass about the demise of the bobwhite in general and the efforts to reverse its fate. She seemed moved by my genuine respect for the species. Upon arriving back at my rental house, I walked around the front of the truck only to find the poor creature in the ra- diator grill. I gingerly removed him and looked at my seemingly heart-broken companion. I said, "If you stay for din- ner, I will fry him up and you can have the breast." Her rapid departure freed the way for me to meet and marry Susie. I hope I am not similarly looking for a new magazine to publish my musings.
