2B Daily News – Saturday, August 13, 2011 Religion Faith&Worship Church news Fireside group prayers Baha i Faith of Tehama County will be hold- ing Firesides at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays at Brick- yard Creek Apartments, 1275 Walnut St., in Red Bluff. The group prayer meetings are open to all denominations. For more information call 385-1091. Memorization class Prof. Tom Meyer, who was educated in Jerusalem, is teaching a credited class on Bible memorization at Shasta Bible College starting Aug. 30. Meyer has memorized more than 10 books of the Bible and has many tips to help people. For more information or to register call 1-800- 800-4SBC or visit www.thescripturecannotbebro- ken.com Witnesses invite all to attend convention in Sac. Jehovah’s Witnesses are inviting all to attend a program focusing on a government that mil- lions, perhaps billions, pray for. God’s King- dom government, which is requested in the world-famous model prayer taught by Jesus Christ, will be the focus of the 2011 "Let God’s Kingdom Come!" District Convention to be held at the Sacramento Convention Center. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that the request for God’s Kingdom in the model prayer, recorded in the Bible at Matthew 6:10 (also known as the Lord’s Prayer or the Our Father), has profound meaning. They also believe that the answer to that prayer will bring significant changes to the earth and mankind. The Witnesses’ convention program promis- es intriguing details from the Bible’s explana- tion of such developments. Starting this week- end, and continuing for the next three weeks, Jehovah’s Witnesses will put forth extra effort to extend a personal invitation to everyone from the Redding, Red Bluff Cottonwood and Ander- son area to attend the convention with them. The final of seven three-day events to be held in Sacramento will begin at 9:20 a.m. on Aug. 26. The daily themes are based on pas- sages of Scripture including Matthew 4:17, Matthew 6:33, and 2 Peter 1:11. Strengthening one’s faith in the reality of that Kingdom will be the focus of the program. There is no admis- sion fee. Conventions of Jehovah’s Witnesses are supported entirely by voluntary donations. Cutting off ears Has someone ever said things about you that were light years from the truth? (Or should I say dark years from the truth?) During these times it is our human nature to instantly defend our- selves. It's hard to stand by and do nothing when you are unfairly accused. Yet God is speaking to the innocent – us – in Psalms 34:13, when He cautions, "Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit." Jesus was falsely accused many times, yet He exercised humility and discernment in each situation. You never see him trying to defend himself or get in arguments about who was right or who was wrong. When Jesus was betrayed by Judas, He simply stood and took the blow of accusation. He could have taken action to protect Himself, but he didn't. Then the mob came, and arrested Him - and do you remember what Peter did? Thinking he had to take action, he impulsively cut off the servant of the High Priest’s ear. But Jesus said, "No, that is not how you handle things!" Then he touched the man's ear and healed him. Peter was talking and acting when he should have been watching and lis- tening. God speaks to us who believe ourselves innocent again in Prov.12:18 when He says, "There are those who CONSIDER SCRIPTURE The Rev. Betty Hanna- speak rashly like the piercing of the sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." God had great plans for Peter and he has great plans for each of us, but if we want to reach peo- ple for Christ we can't do it by taking out our sword and cut- ting people's ears off when we are angry or hurt. How many times do we prevent someone's spiritual growth, blow our testimony or hinder the blessings of God from coming into our own lives, all because we don't control what comes out of our mouths? This is a big deal! Throughout God’s word we are told to be careful how we use our mouths. We must pay attention to our words! Our mouths were NOT created to hurt, be abrasive, put down, or belit- tle others. The tongue can destroy or heal, but it is meant to heal by the One who created it. We can learn from this lesson! Our hurtful and abrasive words can cut off people's ability to hear, especially those to whom we are trying to be a witness. We can't just fly off the han- dle when we feel like it—even when we are trying and perhaps needing to Chaunda Jensen GodTalk defend ourselves. We need (much more) to be sensitive to God; if he wants us to say nothing then we must stand still and say nothing—even if it means letting someone think they are right when we know they are not. Prov. 13:3 says, "He who guards his mouth keeps his life, but he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin" This is God speak- ing to us. We must use our mouth to speak good, heal- ing, restoring, uplifting words and not words that will cut peoples ears off – so to speak. We must learn to guard our words, learn self-control and act in humility. Speak Life: Lord with your help I will guard my words and act with self- control and humility today. Chaunda Jensen and her husband Larry, have lived in Red Bluff for 20 years and are founders of Jensen Ministries. They are Missionary Evangelists, traveling to churches all over Northern California and Nevada. E-mail Larry and Chaunda at lrjensen@sbcglobal.net" What religious values should be part of government decisions? Voices of Faith Witherspoon, pastor of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, Kansas City, Mo.: I believe we are the government. We determine by the represen- tatives we choose the values that become a part of gov- ernment decisions. For me, those values are embodied in social justice prophets such as Amos and Micah. Amos condemns Israel when the nation "tramples the heads of the poor into dust of the earth, and push the afflicted out of the way" (Amos 2:7). The prophet Micah asks, "...what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8) Jesus further defines jus- tice and kindness in Matthew 22:34-40. When Jesus is asked to which is the greatest commandment, he responds "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a sec- ond is like it. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two command- ments hang all the law and the prophets." This second command- ment, which quotes Leviti- cus 19:18, gives us a world where justice and kindness undergird all decisions. We are commanded to love God and to love our neighbor just as we love ourselves If we desire "life, liberty and the pursuit of happi- ness," we would assume that our neighbors would like these things also. What would such an assumption mean to our discussion of health care, education, housing and a secure old age? What would such an assumption mean to our design of prison programs or our view of undocument- ed workers? Amos would say it would mean that "jus- tice would roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream" (Amos 5:24). PHILOSOPHY HELPS Rabbi Mark Levin of Congregation Beth Torah, Overland Park, Kan.: Deci- sion-making inherently involves values. In deciding we demonstrate preferring one course of action over another. To do so, we choose what we most value. All values may be reli- gious. Each religion expresses preferences regarding every decision in life for its adherents. There- fore, all decisions we make for ourselves may well be derived religiously. Fortunately, values need not be derived exclusively from religious postulates. Philosophy also engages us in moral reasoning. But phi- losophy possesses a distinct advantage over religion in a country that advocates the separation between religion and state. In a religiously neutral environment, values argued in the public square should also possess valid, philosophical underpinning to be discussed and embraced by members of differing religions. Consider abortion: We are debating the value of life, autonomy and when life begins. If I argue based on a revealed text, like the Bible, I exclude non believ- ers from the debate. But, having derived my conclu- sion personally from my religion, I can choose to argue philosophically in the public square.
