School Days, School Days Some readers who have come and gone through the school gates may remember the words to the heading song. "School Days, School Days, Dear Old Golden Rule Days, Reading and Writing and‘Rithmatic, Talk to the rule of a Hickory Stick…" Parents have been busy getting the kids ready for a new year of learning. The important part of learning is what comes into the brain of each child. How the teachers and teacher assistants convey the learning is another most important part of teaching. It is just as important for teachers to keep on learning as it is for the children to be tackling a stack of new learning areas each year. Many long known methods are still very important and some current methods of teaching and learning are complimentary to the learning patterns we have used over the years. In recent years Teacher/ Child Interaction has always been an important issue to most staff and to many parents. Recent studies have shown that an individual’s ability to grow and learn depends on the interplay between nature (genetic factors) and nurture (the environ- ment—interactions with people and things). It is very important that those of us who are teachers remember the importance of posi- tive interaction with students on a daily basis. The human brain is hard wired to benefit from rich positive interac- tions and positive experiences. This interaction is most important in the early years. Learning is lifelong, the old time song verse of using a hick- ory stick may not be the approved of choice when interacting with a child of any age. Perhaps someone who has recreated a new stanza to the "Golden School Days…" song from McGuffey’s Reader. The daily interaction that we have with any age student is worth its weight in gold. Positive and mean- ingful interaction stimu- lates the brain in develop- ing learning. The brain orchestrates the way peo- ple see, think, feel, hear, communicate, taste, smell, speak, move, analyze, eval- uate, balance, create, and respond. The brain controls how a person receives information, analyzes it, and encodes, stores, and recalls it is memory. The developing of positive inter- action between teacher and child is pleasant and brain building. If one knows each child’s skills, needs, and interests the bonding of teacher and child stimulate the brain towards learning. If a child has a negative experience from a teacher the brain will be unlikely to respond positively to it. Using gentle touch, guide, and redirection is important to support a child’s learning devel- opment. Responding to a child’s cues, developmental needs, behaviors and events consistently and fairly will build understanding and desire for the child to continue to want to learn. Using negative, harsh lan- guage with a child who desires sup- port in learning could unexpectedly loose his or her desire to learn.
