Along with caffeine, sleep helps me get through the day. I find sleep relaxing, pleasurable, and frankly, a human necessity. I am in love with someone, however, who has the most erratic sleep patterns I've ever seen. She doesn't sleep. She disapproves of my caf- feine intake because she believes it is unnatural. Unlike my girlfriend, I cannot take four naps during the day or run indefinitely on two hours of "rest." There have been many times when I have been extremely tired, want- ing to go to bed, and she is bursting with energy, refusing to let me sleep. When I do get my way, she sulks and sometimes gets angry. I really don't see me getting my sleep as interfering with her lifestyle so much, but she seems to think so. Is there a way to get some shut-eye without seeming unreasonable? —TiredStudent DEAR TIRED » One way to get some decent shut eye would be to break up with your girlfriend. She sounds like a nightmare. Not only is sleep a hu- man necessity, it is quite simply your right as a human being to give your body the rest it requires. If she catnaps through- out the day and is awake at night, then she had bet- ter hope she lands with a career (and a partner) that will accommodate this pattern. I also think she needs to be evaluated by a doctor. Some of the behavior you describe sounds manic. At the end of the day (literally) do you really want to be with someone who takes it personally when you sleep at night? DEAR AMY » I'm 18, and going away to university. Last month my mom kicked me out of my house. It was a turbulent summer. Last year my mom and dad divorced and my mom started dating. The divorce was really hard on my little brother and me, but it got bad when my mom started dating her current partner. He is mean and selfish. He is influencing my mom in negative ways and persuaded her to kick me out of my childhood home. I get good grades, have two jobs, drive and pay for most everything on my own. I don't know what I did to provoke this. I know I'm 18 now, but this is so sudden. The woman I knew a year ago would have never even considered abandoning me like this! What can I do to get my mom back in my life? — Lonely DEAR LONELY » I am sorry you are going through this. It sounds like your mother is being controll- ed by this other person, and that is frightening. Unfortunately, right now there is not much you can actively do to get your mother back (although her attitude toward you will probably change in time). What you need to do now is cope with this loss and deal with your concerns about her and your sibling.
