Sigma Chi 3 Bart Matheney '82 Values Sigma Chi Friendships B art Matheney '82 felt a connection with Sigma Chi from the beginning of recruitment. "I immediately felt a sense of bonding with the actives but also with the others going through recruitment. These are the same guys I still hang out with today," he said. Bart earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Texas. He moved to Houston after graduation and worked as a landman in Baton Rouge and Lafayette, Louisiana. He was then offered a job in Austin by a relative of a pledge brother and has been back ever since. Today Bart is a founding partner of AQUILA Commercial, an Austin-based commercial real estate firm. His career achievements include completing in excess of 10,000,000 square feet of leasing and sales transactions and being named Austin Business Journal's Heavy Hitter three of the last seven years. Sigma Chi influenced Bart's career by improving his communication and interpersonal skills. "I think it taught me how to interact with peers and adults on more of a professional and business level," Bart said. He is grateful for the connections that Sigma Chi has provided over the years. "I have met numerous Sigma Chis throughout my career and have done business with a number of Alpha Nu brothers." As an undergraduate, Bart served Alpha Nu as social chairman, recruitment chairman, and consul. He recalls a number of alumni having an influence on his undergraduate years. "Dan Cogdell '79 was a very positive influence as a pledge trainer," he said. "Many of the brothers that were juniors when I was a freshman were very involved in our pledge class and were mentors." Bart's advice for collegians is to "learn as much as you can, enjoy your time in college, and identify your passion and follow it." He is proud of the Chapter for their efforts in reaching out to alumni. Bart has remained engaged with the Chapter over the years and encourages alumni to reconnect as well. "Get involved—Fight Night is coming up!" Bart enjoys spending time with brothers from his time in the Chapter House. "Audrey Freeman '84 was, and still is, a force in my life. Don Twomey '82 and I have spent the last 10 or so Christmas Eves with Audrey at Chuys!" Bart lives in Austin and enjoys hunting and fishing, which he says were "tried and true favorites of recruitment and brotherhood activities while at school." His sons are Sigma Chis, James, University of Alabama '15, and Thomas, University of Alabama '14, and his daughter is a Chi Omega at the University of Missouri. Jones III '06 Aneil Kochar '12 Adam Skrypczak '12 A s a five-time legacy, joining Sigma Chi was a natural decision for Lucien Warner '56. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Lea Hume '1898, father, Lucien M. Warner Sr., Tulane '23, and three uncles: Allan Lea Hume '23, Evan Hume, M.D. '25, and Clyde Warner '21, M.D., Lu describes his recruitment process as "rather automatic." He said they all were "improved by and grateful for Sigma Chi." Lu had a sense of pride as an Alpha Nu. He said, "I felt we were the best all-around group on campus." He began his career in banking in Arizona in 1960 and is retired from a career in real estate development. He was partner in The Westcor Co., where he was involved with building regional shopping centers and a boutique luxury resort, including The Boulders in Carefree, Arizona. He was also involved in developing several golf courses, including The Bandit, east of New Braunfels, Texas. Lu learned many significant lessons as an Alpha Nu undergraduate that contributed to his career success. "Sigma Chi was a broadening experience for me. It grew me up, so to speak, and exposed me to a diverse brotherhood." While in the Chapter House, Lu was grateful for the guidance and leadership of Howard Brunson Jr. '52, Clough Shelton '54, Joe Foster '50, and Richard Gemmer '55. Over the years, Lu has stayed in touch with his Sigma Chi brothers, and he looks forward to reaching out more in the future. Lu encourages undergraduates to appreciate the symbols of Sigma Chi. "I would urge brothers to pay special attention to the White Cross and all that it encompasses. It is Christian cement and indicates much value," he said. Lu and his wife of 50 years, Fae, live in Carefree. They have three children, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Lu is a lifetime golfer. You can contact him at warner1res@aol.com.
