4B Daily News – Wednesday, August 10, 2011 CHP investigates truck driver in fatal I-5 pileup SACRAMENTO (AP) — A commercial truck driver changed lanes to avoid traffic slowing in a construction zone and then plowed into vehicles stopped in front of him, leading to Monday’s fiery pileup north of the state cap- ital that left three dead, including a 2-year-old girl, the California Highway Patrol said in a report Tuesday. Carlos Hernandez, 38, was dri- ving a small freight truck on com- pany business Monday afternoon when he changed lanes to avoid traffic on Interstate 5 near Wood- land, according to the CHP. Five of the six vehicles involved were so badly charred investigators had trouble identify- ing them. A 49-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man, both from Oregon, died in an SUV, while the child died after being trapped in sedan. The three had suffered exces- sive burns, but it was not clear whether they died from the impact or subsequent fire, said Robert LaBrash, chief deputy coroner for the Yolo County Sheriff’s Depart- ment. Autopsy results are pend- ing. Hernandez and six others were injured and taken to area hospi- tals. Three were taken to the Uni- versity of California, Davis Med- ical Center in Sacramento and had been released by Tuesday after- noon while a 39-year-old woman remained hospitalized there in good condition, said Charles Casey, a spokesman for a hospital. A 61-year-old man and a 21- year-old woman, both of whom were in the sedan with the child, were in fair condition at Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael, officials said. Both had been hospitalized with severe cuts and burns. It was unclear where Hernan- dez had been taken or what condi- tion he was in. The CHP declined to release the name of the compa- ny that employed Hernandez, cit- ing the ongoing investigation.
