Malcolm and Clara Brown recently celebrated their 60th wedding anni- versary and Malcolm's 80th birthday with a Saturday af- ternoon party and luncheon in their honor. Many friends and fam- ily, some traveling a great distance, attended the cele- bration at Bethel church in Red Bluff to share their spe- cial day. Malcolm and Clara were married on Sept. 4, 1954 in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. Immediately after mar- riage they moved to Bur- ney, where they lived for more than 20 years and raised their family. They have two children, Sandra Rock of Redding and Dar- rell Brown of Anderson. Malcolm and Clara helped to build the current Assembly of God church in Burney, where they were ac- tive members for more than 20 years. Malcolm worked in the local sawmill in Bur- ney for 17 and a half years, and was lead millwright when the mill closed in 1975. He immediately got a job at Kimberly-Clark in Anderson and they moved to Cottonwood in 1975. Clara worked at Mayer's Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills for five years before the move to Cotton- wood. In 1982 Malcolm and Clara moved to Red Bluff where they purchased coun- try property and built their beautiful home where they have lived for 30 years net- tled among walnut orchards surrounded by fruit and nut trees. Malcolm later worked at Simpson Paper Mill for more than 12 years, and was supervisor over the mainte- nance department until he retired at the age of 55 in 1991. Clara is a registered nurse, having worked the majority of her nursing ca- reer as a Med-Surg nurse at St. Elizabeth Commu- nity Hospital. She retired from a charge nurse posi- tion in 2008 after 28 years of service. They are active mem- bers of Bethel church of Red Bluff and enjoy fish- ing, camping and traveling all over the U.S. and Can- ada, sight-seeing in their fifth wheel. They have five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Clara spends much of her spare time working in her yard, picking from her or- chard, finding great joy in canning, preserving and sharing from her bounty with friends and family. Malcolm is the neighbor- hood handy-man, spending much of his spare time help- ing neighbors and friends with building projects, re- pairs and property mainte- nance. They are loved by all who know them. CELEBRATION Brownscelebrate60th anniversary and 80th birthday Debit cards are by far my least fa- vorite type of plas- tic. The fraud pro- tection is, at best, shaky. But beyond that, there is the temptation to use a debit card with a certain level of abandon — to pur- chase everything under the sun by swiping instead of writing a check or pay- ing with cash. It becomes far too easy to empty your bank ac- count using a debit card than if you actually had to write out the checks and think about what you're doing. I would rather see you use a credit card. What if I told you there is a way you can have a fully functional debit card without any of the problems and hassles that come with running up a credit card balance you cannot pay off in a single month. You'd say, "Mary, this is brilliant!" Well, get ready because that's exactly what I have for you. Step 1. To do this, you need a credit card with a $0 balance. This should be a MasterCard or Visa that has no annual fee. Step 2. Trans- fer money into this account. Do this by check or on- line as you would if you did have a bal- ance and were sim- ply sending in the money to pay it off. This will result in your account show- ing a credit balance. If you send in $500, you will see a credit balance of -$500 on your next statement or online when you check your account. This is your money in the bank. And, yes, it is perfectly legal to have a credit balance on a credit card account. Step 3. When you shop online, at a store, or visit a restaurant — anywhere you normally depend on your debit card because the money comes straight out of your bank account — use this DIY "debit card" instead. Step 4. In two or three days, the amount of your purchase will show up on your account as a charge. Your credit balance will be reduced by that amount with no fees or addi- tional charges. If your pur- chase was for $3.73, your $500 credit balance will be reduced accordingly to $496.27. Step 5. Watch your ac- count as you would any ac- count. If you see a fraud- ulent charge, you have all the protection of federal law that regulates credit cards. Call customer ser- vice without delay. Step 6. When your credit balance runs low, deposit additional funds. Step 7. If you need to get your credit balance re- funded, call customer ser- vice with your request. By law, they must send it to you in full within seven days of your request. There you go. And, yes, it is brilliant. Wouldyouliketosend a tip to Mary?
