Large plumes of smoke pushed north by winds billowed over an area where firefighters respond to about two fires per year, Red Bluff Fire Divi- sion Chief Matthew Shobash said. Shobash said strong afternoon winds played a role in the fire's quick spread along an embankment west of the railroad tracks in the area, but fire- fighters were able to mitigate danger to homes. He said the railroad tracks served as a natural barrier, stopping flames spreading to the east. Shobash would not immediately speculate as to the cause of the fire, saying it is under investigation. No injuries were reported. RED BLUFF THREE-ACREFIRE THREATENS HOMES The air quality in Te- hama County was in the unhealthy range Tuesday, according to an advisory issued around 12:45 p.m. by the Tehama County Air Pollution Control District. At 12:30 pm The Air Quality In- dex was 106 at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday due to smoke from wildfires in the north state. Conditions were expected to vary from unhealthy to moderate over short peri- ods of time. Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease such as asthma should limit pro- longed outdoor exertion, the release said. The district advises that these sensitive cat- egories stay indoors and avoid intense physical ac- tivity in those areas where high smoke levels are visi- bly evident. While all persons may experience varying de- grees of symptoms, the more sensitive individu- als are at greatest risk of experiencing more aggra- vated symptoms that may include coughing, scratchy throat, watery and itchy eyes and difficulty breath- ing. Those experiencing questionable or severe symptoms should seek pro- fessional medical advice, the release said. All open burning is pro- hibited during this period. For more information call the district at (530) 527-3717.
