18 SEPTEMBER 24-30, 2014 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Books, a career fair and ice cream made the day extra special for more than 400 students who attended the Literacy Day Kickoff at FTCC's College and Career Readiness Program earlier this month. The kickoff started a month-long emphasis on setting goals, exploring ways to build a better future, and developing life-long learning skills. Students in the program share a common goal: improving the quality of life for themselves and their families through education. At the event, the CCR Book Crossing was unveiled. Book Crossings are part of an international effort to get more people reading by encouraging book donations. Thirty-five books were donated and then registered online with BookCrossing.com. A label was placed inside each book indicating that it had been "launched into the wild" at FTCC. Anyone could take the book — at no cost — and then return it, give it to a friend, or keep it. The label held information enabling the reader to write an online review and to follow the book as it passes from person to person. One organizer of the CCR Book Crossing related that she once picked up a book at a Book Crossing in San Diego and later took it to Costa Rica, leaving it at a hotel for someone else to enjoy. The book later found its way to Great Britain, where it has again been launched into the wild. Students seemed excited about the idea of traveling books, and all 35 were taken. During the two-hour event, students visited with representatives from various companies and agencies who provided information about the educational requirements needed for careers in a particular field. A United States Army recruiter explained the process for joining the military. The Educational Opportunities Center and Fort Sill Financial Planning explained how to budget for a college education. McDonald's informed students of potential job openings while personnel from FTCC provided information on Workforce Development, Barbering, Massage Therapy, and courses offered through FTCC's Manufacturing Technology programs, including Computer- Integrated Machining, Electrical Systems, Welding, Surveying, HVAC and Civil Engineering Technology. While enjoying an ice cream sundae, students learned that FTCC offers courses designed to help adults develop skills needed for a career that pays a family-sustaining wage. Whether the course is designed to help an adult attain a high school diploma, learn English as a Second Language, or earn a certificate or a degree, College and Career Readiness faculty and staff help students on their way. According to the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL), 90 million Americans read at basic and below basic levels. The FTCC College and Career Readiness Program works with students whose reading, writing, math, speaking, and computer skills need improvement. Students may have dropped out of school at an early age or may come from another country. They may need job-seeking skills. Whatever the situation, the students at the Literacy Day Kickoff have returned to school to give themselves the gift of education. Learn more about FTCC and "education for life"—no matter where you are in life, FTCC has something to offer.
