Isn't it going to be back this fall on regu- lar television? — Betty Phillips, Stuart, Fla. A : Taking "regular television" to mean CBS, the answer is "yes." The episodes that are going to WGN America and ION Television are repeats from the police drama's first four seasons. The new Season 5 sto- ries of the Tom Selleck-starring show begin this Friday (Sept. 26) on CBS. Q : I saw the "Veronica Mars" movie on cable recently. Were the same actors who were in the movie in the original show, and what years did the series run? — Doug Shaw, Buffalo, N.Y. A : Regarding the actors, in most cases, they were the original performers. The one major excep- tion was Leighton Meester (later of "Gossip Girl"), who was working on another project at the time, so the part of Carrie Bishop was assumed by Andrea Estella. Otherwise, with Kristen Bell (alias Veronica) obviously on board from the start, it didn't take long for the other players to sign up once the funding for the film was secured via a Kickstarter campaign. The weekly series started its run on UPN in 2004 and ended in 2007 after spending its final season on The CW, which was formed by merging UPN and the WB Network. Q : Commercials on CBS tell of a new show called "NCIS: New Orleans." However, the scenes look very familiar to me, and I am sure I have seen this show before. Can you tell me if it has been on already? — Joan French, North Kingstown, R.I. A : The scenes in the ads — the earliest ads for the show, anyway — were taken from last season's two-part episode of the parent "NCIS" that was used as a launch pad for "New Orleans," which pre- mieres this Tuesday (Sept. 23). That's not an uncommon prac- tice in promoting new shows that got their starts as "backdoor pilots," episodes of existing series that also served to try to sell other series. It was very simple to do that with "NCIS," especially since some of that show's executive producers (includ- ing Mark Harmon) have the same job on "NCIS: New Orleans." Q : NBC recently celebrated Al Roker's birthday on "Today," and his three children were on the show ... but there was no message from, and no mention of, his wife. Why? — Judye Siconolfi, Nettles Island, Fla. A : It's probably because his wife works for the competition. Deborah Roberts is an ABC News correspondent, and the reality is that the two network news divisions are locked in a major competition for ratings, very particularly where their morning shows are concerned. One might like to think that birth- day celebrations supersede such business matters, but it's likely that NBC didn't want to do anything that might give ABC even a scintilla of promotion, even indirectly.
