The congregation of St. Paul Lutheran Church would like to invite the community to join in the gathering of blankets and warm clothing to benefit the PATH shelters in the area. Bring any warm items you would like to donate 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sun- day, Sept. 21 and 28 to the church at 455 Jefferson St., the corner of Elm and Jef- ferson. Items will be given to the shelters before they open on Nov. 1. The public is welcome to attend the services. The early service is held at 8:30 a.m., with Pastor Ben Pa- dilla, the late service is at 11 a.m., with Pastor Dallas Dubke. There is also an adult Bi- ble Study, led by Ron Rob- ertson, at 9:45 a.m. The study title is "Who am I and what am I do- ing here" to be followed by "Noah," the Bible's version of the man. LUTHERANCHURCH St. Paul's Lutheran Church collecting for PATH By Jay Nelson Here is a big shout out to Com- munity Bap- tist Church, and to Robby and Elisa Annis. The church is host- ing, what Robbie and Elisa have visioned and produced. It is called The Gathering; it is a time of fellowship and music for individuals 18 to 35 years of age. It is a marvelous thing when one connects with others to receive encour- agement and positive in- fluence. It is a tragedy that many join themselves to individuals who use them, and lead them down a path of destruction. It seems, at any age or walk of life, every person needs to find a place of encour- agement and belonging among one's peers. We all need to be surrounded by others who can iden- tify with ambitions, strug- gles and fears, but also of- fer hope. In the early 1980s, I lived in another commu- nity during the week while attending junior college. I would head back to Red Bluff on the weekend. Being in my early 20s, it was a time of growth and maturing. Beginning a journey of personal inde- pendence apart from my parents, it seemed that the Christian faith and values passed on to me were chal- lenged at every turn. Those times were a good opportunity for me to solidify a faith of my own, based on the author- ity of the Word of God — the Bible — and the work of the Holy Spirit in me. It is still a work in progress to this day, but the days of young adulthood were a pivot point of direction. A valuable part of the process, back in the day, was a weekly Fri- day night meet- ing at the home of Doug and Judy Gal- loway out on Ridge Road. That meeting became my oasis, a place of refresh- ing, reinforcement, peace, and encouragement. I re- member I could not wait to get out of my last class on Friday afternoon and drive to Red Bluff. I antic- ipated the time of fellow- ship that would come with the evening. Years later, there is now a new oasis for young adults of Tehama County. I am excited to promote The Gathering, hosted by Red Bluff Community Baptist Church. Persons of all ages are welcome. Robbie and Elisa and the band they have gathered minister to their own peers. The focus of music style and the core message at The Gathering is directed to relate primarily to those peers of the 18 to 35 years' tier. These are young peo- ple whose lives and inter- ests are beyond the age of a youth group, but are still some years away from eli- gibility for a senior citizen discount. Out of each generation God has called individu- als to lead and proclaim His Word to their peers. These leaders have a gen- uine encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ, and de- termine to share the mes- sage of His redemptive work by any means. These pioneers are more often than not, misunderstood. Some are viewed by many as extreme, or driven by emotionalism. The truth is, God has lit a fire in their hearts, with a de- sire to worship and serve Him. They are not con- tent to live in the smoke of past revivals of gener- ations before them. They seek to bring hope to their peers, many of whom are overcome with the pres- sures of life, and wounded from broken relationships. The vision of The Gath- ering is to provide an oa- sis of encouragement for youth, both with and with- out a church home. The format usually includes a time of singing praises to God, mixed with a brief message, or video presen- tation. Inspiration for The Gathering reaches back to attendance at the Hume Lake Christian Camps. Band members, and other local youth have made an annual trek to sum- mer camps at Hume Lake, which is east of Squaw Valley, California. Their desire is to bring home a message hope and joy to Red Bluff and Tehama County. For more schedule in- formation, or to ask ques- tions about The Gathering, email thegatheringinred- bluff@gmail.com. You can visit the group page of Facebook, or call 530 737- 7278. CONCERTS Award-winning singer coming to North State Carmen Associated Press VATICAN CITY The battle lines are being drawn be- fore a major church meet- ing on family issues that represents a key test for Pope Francis. Five high-ranking cardi- nals have taken one of Fran- cis' favorite theologians to task over an issue dear to the pope's heart: Whether Catholics who divorce and remarry without an annul- ment can receive Commu- nion. They have written a book, "Remaining in the Truth of Christ," to rebut German Cardinal Walter Kasper, whom Francis praised in his first Sunday blessing after he was elected pope as "a great theologian" and subsequently entrusted with a keynote speech to set the agenda for the two- year study on marriage, di- vorce and family life that opens Oct. 5. Kasper, for a decade the Vatican's top official deal- ing with the Orthodox and Jews, delivered his re- marks to cardinals earlier this year on the issues to be discussed during the synod. At the pope's request, he asked whether these di- vorced and remarried Cath- olics might be allowed in limited cases to receive the Eucharist after a period of penance. The outcry that ensued has turned the 81-year- old Kasper into the big- gest lightning rod for in- ternal debate that the Catholic Church has seen in years.
