ByCamInman BayAreaNewsGroup SANTA CLARA Sunday's starting quarterbacks will be the San Francisco 49ers' Co- lin Kaepernick vs. the Ari- zona Cardinals' Drew Stan- ton, who'll make his second straight start because of a nerve issue that continues to plague Carson Palmer. Kaepernick is listed as prob- able because of a back injury that coach Jim Harbaugh de- scribed as "a little issue." Kae- pernick fully practiced for a second straight day upon ap- pearing on the injury report, and he didn't appear hindered during Friday's team stretch. Asked if Kaepernick got hurt during a collision Sun- day with Bears defensive end Jared Allen, Harbaugh replied: "I didn't hear him complain about anything the day after, or after that. He still hasn't complained about anything. He practiced every day." Kaepernick has won all three of his previous starts against the Cardinals, passing for 838 yards and six touch- downs with a 106.4 rating. Last Sunday, Stanton started his first game since 2010 and was efficient (14-of- 29, 167 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions) in a 25-14 win at the New York Giants. By Curtis Pashelka Bay Area News Group SAN JOSE General manager Doug Wilson had his opinion. Joe Thornton and other Sharks veter- ans certainly have theirs. On the first day of training camp Friday — roughly three months after Wilson declared the Sharks a "tomorrow team," prom- ising changes to the team's cul- ture and hierarchy in the wake of a stunning first round loss to the Los Angeles Kings — San Jo- se's veteran players said their ex- pectations for a successful season haven't changed. "That's Doug's opinion," Thorn- ton said when asked about Wil- son's comments in June. "I think if you'd ask anybody in here I don't think they have the same feeling. We're confident with this group. Just ask these guys, I think we're pretty confident we can get the job done." Wilson later modified his com- ments to say that "tomorrow" starts in September. But asked if the initial comments from Wilson can be motivating, Thornton said, "I have enough motivation. I don't need somebody else telling me we can't do it." The Sharks wanted to move forward Friday from talk about their early playoff exit, in which the Kings became just the fourth team in NHL history to win a best-of-seven series after trailing three-games-to-none. First, though, the Sharks had to address an offseason which included Wilson's pointed com- ments, Thornton being stripped of the captaincy – at least for now – and coach Todd McLellan sug- gesting that everyone, veterans included, would go into camp with a clean slate. "I think we have to get over it," forward Patrick Marleau said NHL Sharks focused on moving forward Leave playoff exit behind as training camp opens By Michael Wagaman The Associated Press ALAMEDA Already staggering from back-to-back poor perfor- mances, the Oakland Raiders will likely be without two of their starting linebackers for Sunday's game in New England. Middle linebacker Nick Roach is still recovering from a concus- sion he suffered during the pre- season and has only recently re- turned to practice on a limited basis. Roach, who played every defensive snap in 2013, has yet to be cleared through the NFL's pro- tocol for concussions and is ques- tionable to play against the Patri- ots. "My job now is just to try to get back as soon as I can," Roach said Friday. "You want to be there for your team in any way possible. I try to communicate with the guys whenever I can, anything to help them execute at a high level." The Raiders are hopeful Roach will be cleared in time to play, though it's likely to be a game- time decision. The veteran line- backer said he's feeling better but he and the team continue to take a cautious approach given the na- ture of his injury.
