They might have butter- flies, they might not have slept much, but they’ll wake up. We can assume Donnie Button and the coaching staff will take care of that. But I wish, Deonte, Blake, and Kolby would never wake up. The Little Leaguers are living out a dream right now. They don’t know it. They think they’re just living out their lives. Those of us with life-experience like you and I — we know better. This type of stuff doesn’t happen every sum- mer. Most of us never get to experience any- thing quite like it. A police escort through town, your picture plastered in every newspaper, a town scraping together enough money to make sure everything you need is paid for. Yeah, they’re living a dream alright. That’s what we say, anyway. We think we know better. Taylor, Michael and Wesley can afford to live a dream. They have no idea that dreams slip away with age or self-promises are eventually forgotten. Our life-experience has taught us dreams fade without us even realizing it. The stock market tumbles, we lose a job, we think there’s always next year. There’s real world things that get in the way. Being grown-up, we know that. We find it cute most of the boys say they want to be a major league baseball player when they grow up. They simply don’t know any better. We’ll let them believe in that dream for a few more years, before we throw our reality at them. They’ll have a few people in their lives telling them to keep going, but the rest of soci- ety — we’ll make sure we keep their heads out of the clouds. We call it being grounded. Of course, who are we to tell Dimitre, Lane and Bode that dreams aren’t real — that reach- ing for the stars can’t happen. What Nicholas, Evan and Tanner have learned over the past couple weeks is that dreams can come true. They are living proof. All you need to do is work hard, catch a few breaks and put your mistakes behind you. And of course it doesn’t hurt to know your family and community are supporting you. They not only believe that formula works they know it does, because for them it has. Because of that they have no reason to believe it won’t happen again and again for the rest of their lives. You and I, we call that youthful ignorance. We call it that because we’ve given up on the notion that sometimes ignorance can be bliss. You see our life experiences in the real world have taught us some things that those Little Leaguers don’t know about. We know about the fear of failure, about dis- trust and even self-doubt. They may have heard those words, but those thoughts won’t be found inside our Little Lea- guers when they go to place their hands over their hearts tonight. Instead their thoughts will resemble the ones they had when a pillow was nestled on their heads instead of a ball cap. And for that reason, Austin, I hope you never wake up. Daily News Sports Editor Rich Greene can’t make it to San Bernardino this weekend. But he’ll be listening to KBLF 1490 AM, this Saturday at 7:30 p.m., as he hopes all of you are, when Red Bluff takes on Southern California. SWIMMING The Sun Oaks swim team capped off an outstanding season by placing third overall in the Year Around cate- gory at the NVAL Championships at Shasta College this past weekend. Four of the 10 swimmers from Red Bluff that competed finished fifth or higher in the High Point standings. Abbey Lair, 8, swam her way to second place overall in the Seasonal category, which included a first place finish in the 25 breaststroke. Julia Brandt, 11, enjoyed a fast meet earning two first place finishes in the 100 IM and the 50 fly. Her time of 29.49 seconds in the 50 Fly was a AAA time and qualified her to compete in the Far Western Cham- pionships in April. Brandt ended up in second place overall in the 11-and 12-year-old girls Year Around Category. Fallyn Gallagher, 10, swam excep- tionally well and finished third overall in the 10-and-under Seasonal category. Jayne Brandt, 9, captured the last trophy, finishing in fifth place overall in the Year Around category. All of the swimmers bettered their times and had a fantastic season. No biggie to the San Francisco 49ers. They have a proven new playmaker among the receivers after sign- ing the wideout to a $3.5 million, one-year contract on Thursday. Edwards' agent, Ben Dogra, confirmed the deal to The Associated Press, less than an hour before San Francisco's free agents took the field for the first time under new coach Jim Harbaugh — who, like Edwards, is a former Michigan man. The Niners announced the acquisi- tion of Edwards shortly after practice began, then he emerged from the locker room less Courtesy photo San Francisco 49ers
