BySethBorenstein The Associated Press WASHINGTON The globe smashed more heat re- cords last month, includ- ing Earth's hottest August and summer, federal mete- orologists said Thursday. May, June and August all set global heat records this year. Meteorologists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administra- tion said the average world temperature in August was 61.36 degrees Fahrenheit, breaking a record set in 1998. Scientists at NASA, who calculate global tempera- ture a tad differently, also found August as the hot- test on record. August was especially hot in the Pacific and In- dian oceans and Africa, but cooler in parts of the United States, Europe and Australia. The world's oceans in August effec- tively tied June for the seas' all-time heat record. The United States ranked barely above its 20th century average in August, with a cool East balancing out a warm West. For the U.S., it was the coolest August and summer since 2009. National Oceanic and At- mospheric Administration records go back to 1880. But it's more than just one month. It was the warmest meteorological summer — June, July and August — on record for the globe, again beating out 1998. WEATHER NOAA:Moreglobalheatrecordsfall By Michael Rubinkam The Associated Press SCRANTON, PA. Cpl. Bryon Dickson was an impecca- ble officer who put his fam- ily first, friends and col- leagues said Thursday at the slain state police troop- er's funeral as a manhunt for his killer continued 40 miles away. Dickson "was no ordi- nary trooper," police Com- missioner Frank Noonan told hundreds of mourners gathered at St. Peter's Ca- thedral in Scranton. Dickson, 38, was gunned down late Friday outside his rural barracks in the Po- cono Mountains. The days since have been "a whirl- wind ... fueled by stress and gallons of coffee," Noonan said. Police are still searching for the suspected shooter, 31-year-old Eric Frein. He's charged with killing Dick- son and wounding another trooper in an ambush that authorities said was likely fueled by his hatred of law enforcement. Schools near the Blooming Grove bar- racks shut down a second day Thursday even as police said it's likely law enforce- ment, not the public, would be the target of any further violence. Mourners attending Dickson's funeral Mass gathered "in sorrow, dis- belief and anger," the Rev. Thomas Muldowney said, but he asked them to fo- cus on the positive impact that Dickson made during his life. Dickson, a Marine Corps veteran who joined the state police in 2007, had worked as a patrol unit supervisor in the barracks since June. The word that best de- scribes Dickson is "impec- cable," Cpl. Derek Felsman said during his eulogy. Fels- man said his best friend took perfect care of his wife, crafted flawless wood toys for his two sons and al- ways wore a crisp and spot- less uniform with gleaming leather boots and belt. He was a "steadfast sol- dier of the law" who regu- larly worked past quitting time to take drunken driv- ers off the street, Felsman said. But he also had a sense of humor. Working the midnight shift in Philadelphia and unable to spend last Val- entine's Day with his wife, Dickson agreed to eat din- ner with his pal Felsman. They walked into the can- dle-lit Italian restaurant and found it packed with couples, love in the air. "At first, he couldn't be- lieve we were actually getting a bite to eat sur- rounded in an atmosphere of mushiness and romance. He quickly overcame those thoughts, and then jokingly asked me to ask to sit on the same side of the booth as him," Felsman said, draw- ing laughter. Thousands of law en- forcement officers from around the country came to Scranton to pay their re- spects, lining up 10 deep outside the church for the funeral procession under a brilliant blue sky. A single bell tolled for more than 20 minutes be- fore the casket arrived, and the sea of uniformed offi- cers stood at attention in utter silence. As Dickson was being laid to rest at a nearby cem- etery, the hunt went on for a man police described as a self-taught survivalist who had expressed anti-law en- forcement and anti-govern- ment feelings for years. Police named Frein as the suspect after finding his abandoned SUV a cou- ple miles from the barracks. They said it contained his driver's license and spent shell casings matching those at the crime scene. State police have warned the public that Frein, of Canadensis, is dangerous, saying he has talked about committing mass murder. They are urging residents to be alert and cautious, but Lt. Col. George Bivens also said he believes Frein's "engaged in a personal bat- tle with law enforcement, particularly the Pennsylva- nia State Police, and will likely stay focused on that fight."
