RANGERS7,ATHLETICS2 Up next:Today,PhiladelphiaPhil- lies at Oakland A's, 6:35p.m., TV on CSNCA. THESCORE ByJonHickey BayAreaNewsGroup OAKLAND The clock is pulling the Oakland Athletics in two di- rections. The passage of time is telling on the A's, who more than ever are running out of days in which to make gains in the American League wild-card race after a 7-2 loss to the Texas Rangers on Thursday. And in getting swept by Texas, the team with the worst record in baseball, the Oakland clock is si- multaneously slowing to a crawl. "These days feel like they're 48 hours long," outfielder Sam Fuld said after Oakland (83-69) fell one-half game behind idle Kansas City (83-68) in the Wild Card chase. The third team in the competition, Seattle, was 1.5 games behind the A's heading in to the Mariners' game in Ana- heim Thursday night. BASEBALL A'sdrop third game in a row to Rangers By Cam Inman Bay Area News Group SANTA CLARA Justin Smith reached the NFL-ozone-layer age of 35 on Sept. 3. On each Sunday since then, the playing field has become his fountain of youth. "He's not showing his age. He's more 23 than 35," nose tackle Ian Williams said. Smith looks revitalized at the start of his 14th season, produc- ing a team-high three sacks and resembling the All-Pro form that was stunted last season by a shoulder injury. "He's healthy right now, he's playing good and he's not slowed down at all," defensive coordina- tor Vic Fangio said. Fangio could have sighed with relief as he said those words Thursday. The 49ers (1-1) need Smith's powerful presence, both on the field and in the locker room, as they try rebounding from their home-opening loss and head to Sunday's NFC West matchup at the Arizona Cardinals NFL 49ers' Smith finds fountain of youth again With a new four-year-contract extension in hand, Marcel Reece entered this season 15 pounds lighter in order to ex- ploit the matchup issues that keep defensive coordinators up at night. Among the five inductees in the Class of 2014 is Doug Dreier. Dreier played baseball and basketball for Red Bluff High School. While he holds a school record for making an 83-foot shot on the basketball court, it was baseball where he made his name. During his senior year Dreier pitched a pair of no-hitters and was selected to the All-Northern Athletic League team. In June 1968 he was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 15th round of the Major League Base- ball draft. He spent seven seasons in the Reds organization, reaching the AAA level, one step away from the big leagues, before being forced to quit baseball be- cause of arm trou- ble. While pitch- ing for the Seat- tle Rainiers of the Northern League, Dreier pitched a no-hitter against the Lewiston Broncs. The time with Seattle was spe- cial for Dreier and his family. His dad Edwin Dreier had signed with the Seattle Rainiers in 1937 back when they were known as the Seattle Indians. Dreier went on to spend more than three decades as a science and math teacher teaching at Wil- lows High School and Bella Vista Elementary School. In addition to teaching he coached flag football, basketball and baseball. Dreier continues to referee bas- ketball games and umpires base- ball. The Hall of Fame Class joining Dreier includes Bev Howard, Gale Gilbert, Kelly Jackson and Angie Weir Miller. Previous inductees to the hall have been Kathy Long Brandt, Tammy Brown, Bob Grimm, Bill Jacobs, Mort Kaer, Doug Sale and Ed Stroman. The Booster Club has donated more than $23,000 to Spartans athletics this year. Tickets for the Oct. 11 dinner at the Red Bluff Community and Senior Center are $25. They are available through Spartan ath- letes at ReMax Top Properties or by emailing spartanboosters@sb- cglobal.net. The night begins with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. followed by a tri- tip dinner at 6:30 p.m. The event is begin sponsored by Cornerstone Community Bank.
