The DePauw Phi T raveling from the suburban Midwest to the silky, white beaches of Thailand are just some of the perks Colin O'Flaherty '04, senior production manager of The Bachelor, enjoys about his job. When it comes to scouting locations to film The Bachelor, both nationally and internationally, Colin and his co-workers are no strangers. "The production team is tasked with making sure the show can happen. Whether it's obtaining the filming permits or budgeting filming in each country—we deal with every department and what their needs are to make every episode." When the show is filming, Colin has a breadth of duties on set and even jokes that he's the man responsible for "putting out the fires." Ever since he was an eager, young undergraduate at DePauw University, Colin always had his sights set on the prospect of moving to Los Angeles, California, and working in the entertainment industry. The summer before his senior year was spent working on an independent feature film, which gave him the connections he needed to really get started in L.A. Colin says once he had his foot in the door of the entertainment industry, he's been working relentlessly and getting promoted ever since. While Colin has gathered countless stories since being in show business, he reflects on one of his earliest as his favorite. "Back in 2005 I was given the opportunity to work on the Academy Awards. I was brought on last minute so I was there for the rehearsal day and the actual filming day to help wherever it was needed. I ended up just hanging backstage and was able to interact with many of the presenters, including Halle Berry, that year." Colin looks back at his time as an undergraduate and says he's grateful to have been a member of Indiana Zeta, as it helped him foster stronger, more meaningful connections with people and ultimately get him to where he is today. He urges fellow Phi Delt brothers to steadfastly chase their dreams. "One thing I've noticed with a lot of new employees, just starting out, is that they're too timid to let their goals be known. They're afraid to speak up regarding positions that they may want to get to in the future. If they don't make it known that they want to move up and have more responsibilities then it's less likely they will be given those chances." Colin speaks fondly of the connections he made as a Phi Delt at DePauw and the brothers he keeps in close contact with today, including Dan Matuszewski '04, David Trogden '04, Craig Snyder '04, PJ McGrew '04, Josh "Slippy" Greulich '04, and Adam Czerwinski '03. In his down time you can likely find Colin playing roller hockey, softball, or in line to watch the newest films.
