Bhattacharyya, an active member of the Hindu community: In 1996, I visited the Unity Church in Unity Village, Mo., on an invitation to talk about my faith, Hin- duism, to a congregation who gathered for the "Honoring the Paths to God" retreat. At the end, Michael and Faith Moran, the organizers of the retreat, presented me with a book titled "Unity: A Quest f or Truth ," written by Eric But- terworth. As a member of the Kansas City Interfaith Coun- cil for many years, I have had the opportunity to read reli- gious publications of many faiths, which helped me to understand and, as a result, to revere different faiths as dif- ferent paths to the summit. I found Butterworth's book especially appealing as I found connectedness with my own belief system. We need to look at religion with an open mind. Bible, Qur’an share messages Syed E. Hasan, Ph.D., Midland Islamic Center: I have studied the Bible, and I am amazed at both the similari- ty and differences when comparing it with the Muslims' holy book, the Qur'an. As it turned out, I was struck with the near-perfect match between the stories of Joseph and of Mary (referred to asMaryam in the Qur'an). Passages like "Cried one of the brothers, 'Slay not Joseph, but if you must do something, throw him down to the bottom of the well; he will be picked up by a car- avan of travelers ' " and"Mary asked: 'How shall I have a son, seeing that no man has touched me and I am not unchaste?' The angel replied: 'So it will be. Thy Lord says this is easy for Me.' So she conceived him, and she retired with him to a remote place " are remarkably sim- ilar. Overall, I found that both books carry the same mes- sages of compassion, peace and justice toward humanity, along with beliefs in accountability, Day of Judgment and life in the hereafter. Thank God it’s Friday Hate Mondays? Of Course you do. It’s the farthest day of the workweek away from Friday. If our workday is a particularly tough one, we console ourselves by counting the days till Friday. Even Wednesdays are referred to as the hump day because it is only two days away from Friday. Say to someone on Tuesday, "good morning, how are you?" and you will more than likely get the usual response, "fine, and you?" But ask someone in the office on the last workday of the week how they are and you will often hear something on the lines of, "Great, it’s Friday, couldn’t be better." Friday mornings are celebrated by choosing a latte over our usual coffee with cream or three sweet rolls instead of the usual one. Employees bring in donuts for their peers to celebrate Fridays. We go to the movies because it is Friday night. We stay up later and over indulge because it’s Friday. There’s even a song sung by Rebecca Black called Friday, "Everybody’s celebrating the weekend," and of course there is the restaurant chain called T.G.I. Friday (Thank God It’s Friday). Tony Campolo, motivational speaker, tells the story of the tradi- tion in his church where once a year they had a "preach off." "Five or six preachers are invited to preach back to back, to see who’s best." Campolo goes on to say he was proud of his sermon, until his senior pastor preached a sermon, "Sunday’s coming." It goes something like this. "Friday, Jesus was dead on the cross. But that’s because it’s Fri- day. Sunday’s coming. Friday, people are saying as things have been so things shall be. You can’t change things in this world. But I’m here to give you the good news. It’s only F-R-I-D-A-Y. Sun- day’s coming." Excitement builds as the message begins to sink in to the listeners. It doesn’t matter what happens on Friday…Sun- day’s coming; the day Jesus rose from the dead, the day we cele- brate His resurrection, the day we come together and remind each other that God is victor, has always been victor, and will always be vic- tor. Our culture cele- brates Friday because it is the beginning of the weekend. They see themselves as free from the enslavement of appointments, rules and regulations for two days out of the week. They can sleep in, get up when they want to, go to bed when they want to, do whatever they want to on Saturday and Sun- day. some have made this hope a topic for late night talk show hosts and letters of ridicule to news papers. But what some distort remains truth. One day Jesus will return for his own people (I Thessalonians 4:15-18). Some say, "He has been promising for centuries, yet everything remains as it has always been" (2 Peter 3:4). What they do not realize is that God does not think of time like we do. He takes a long time before he moves in order to give people time to come to him (2 Peter 3:9-10). Shirley Fay We too can celebrate Fridays but for a different reason. Think of God’s timeline as a week. The seven days of creation and the flood are the Monday. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Solomon and the prophets are the Tuesday. Jesus’ birth and resurrection are the Wednesday. The building of the church and the letters from the apostles are the Thursday. Mod- ern culture in which we are living is the Friday. Saturday is the resur- rection and Sunday is eternity. Looking at it this way, we have every reason to celebrate. It’s our Friday but Jesus is coming. We see wars, earthquakes, fires and tsunamis but Jesus is coming. We experience stock market crashes, home foreclosures, lost jobs, but Jesus is coming. The price of gas skyrockets. The cost of food soars, but Jesus is coming. People marry. People divorce. People are born. People die. But Jesus is coming. It is true that predictions of RICHARDTON, N.D. (AP) — A Roman Catholic monastery in North Dakota is putting its ranching oper- ation out to pasture because it lacks monks with cow- boy skills. Abbot Brian Wangler tells The Dickinson Press that ranching has been a part of Assumption Abbey since 1893, when it was in Devil’s Lake. He says raising cattle helped make the monastery self-suffi- cient. He says two monks now care for 260 cows at the Richardton abbey, but only one has the skills to do it by GodTalk Sunday is not only rep- resented by Jesus’ physi- cal return for His children. It’s about His meeting our needs. When something goes wrong and we don’t see things getting better, we are tempted to say to God, "Where are you?" If you are in control, why did this happen." We have forgotten, it’s only Fri- day; Sunday’s coming. As sure as the sun rises, Sun- day’s coming. As sure as night will fall, Sunday’s coming. As sure as the winds will blow, as sure as the birds will sing, as sure as the flowers will bloom, Sun- day’s coming. As sure as days form weeks, as sure as weeks form months, as sure as months form years, as sure as years form cen- turies, Sunday’s coming. As sure as Christ came once he will come again. Thank God it’s Friday because Sunday’s coming. Dr. Shirley Fay is a Christian psycho therapist and pastoral counselor in practice in Red Bluff for many years. She can be reached through the Cornerstone Church of God or at 530-646- 9810 in Red Bluff. ND abbey puts ranching operation out to pasture himself. Seventy-six-year-old Brother Placid Gross has tend- ed the monastery’s cattle for 51 years and says it once had one of the biggest ranching operations in the region. He says he won’t miss the hard work but will miss the cows. Wangler says the abbey will rent its pastures to other ranchers. ——— Information from: The Dickinson Press, http://www.thedickinsonpress.com Tehama County Church Directory This directory sponsored by: Red Bluff....
