World Holiday Festival Brings
the World to Our Doorstep
by STEPHANIE CRIDER
Culture: the behaviors and beliefs
characteristic of a particular social,
ethnic, or age group: the youth culture;
the rock n roll culture.
With the International Folk Festival
just behind us, we've all seen at least
some of the many cultures that make up
Fayetteville's social fabric.
Now, the World
Holiday Festival is
looking to take the
multicultural message
to a new level.
The event will
showcase the celebrations
of holidays from around the
world. Dec. 11-12 from
12 to 8 p.m., the Crown
Arena will feature the aromas, music,
dance, customs and fl avors of folks from
around the world.
"It is a chance for people all over
the world to learn things about each
other like the Chinese don't celebrate
the holidays like we celebrate," said
Liliana Parker, event coordinator. "This
is a chance for people to see that other
cultures have another idea of celebration
which is different than Christmas. This
is not just about Christmas, it is
holidays in general."
Parker hopes to see barriers come
down and doors open as visitor to the
World Holiday Festival learn in depth
about the many different ways of the
folks who live around them.
"We are going to have
entertainment— local and international,
but also with this event we would like
to show a deeper perspective. We
have cultures that never have an
opportunity to express themselves
for example, the mentally disabled
— they never have the opportunity
to interact and show 'This is my
perspective of the holidays,'" said
Parker. "For me, this is about
showing my culture to the rest of
the city and for me to be able to open
my mind to understand and know the
cultural aspect of other countries or
regions or cultures or groups."
There's still room if for more
organizations who would like to exhibit
or be a part of the festival. For more
