Ontheair celled, buttherulesbeing used are focused on all the wrong things. The focus of these transfer rules seems to be on protecting what's fair for section titles, instead of what is fair and right for the students. It's a shame rules to protect title winners in Los Angeles and the Bay Area mean a 15-year-old kid in Red Bluff can't play sports with his friends. So kids have you learned your lesson? If you want to attend a mili- tary academy you have to do so from your freshman year, once that passes don't bother giving it a try. Or if you still believe in trying new experiences, simply have your parents establish a residency in the new state. But above all else when you're thou- sands of miles away from your family, don't try to make new friends by join- ing their little football team, especially if it's called "varsity." Because we all know the only reason a student plays a sport is to win and every student who trans- fers is the next Walter Payton and can swing the balance of competitive- ness. Those are the rules. On that sour note, on to the Week 1 previews with a standout game on the schedule: WEST VALLEY (1-0) AT RED BLUFF (1-0), 7:30 P.M. FRI- DAY What a doozy this one is shaping up to be. The Spartans raised eyebrows across the Northern Section with their thrashing of Central Valley, while the defend- ing Division 2 champion Eagles had to squeak by Foothill. Toss in it's Red Bluff's home opener, that West Valley is Spartans head coach Corey Hein's alma mater and after a two- year break this neigh- borly rivalry is back on the schedule, and there's no shortage of compelling story lines. West Valley lost one of the best players the sec- tion has seen in Austin Clark to graduation. Five different Eagles carried the ball at least five times in last week's 23-15 win over Foothill. Quarterback Kody Kar- pinski is a junior, but he started his sophomore year and has plenty of ex- perience. Where West Valley is affected the most to grad- uation is its offensive line, which has no starters re- turning. That has Red Bluff's vaunted Front 7 chomping at the bit. The Spartans believe they can be the North- ern Section's best defense this year. After two defen- sive scores and 10 sacks last week they're well on their way. Last year West Val- ley was the best defense and the Eagles aren't go- ing to hand over that title lightly. They're switching to a 3-4 scheme this year led by Jeremy Williams, Chace Savage and Zach Zambrana. Points could be hard to come by in this game with field position and the turnover battle even more important than usual. USEFUL OF USELESS STAT OF THE WEEK In 2003 Red Bluff put together a perfect 10-0 regular sea- son and was rewarded with the top seed and a bye in the playoffs. The Spartans were handed their only loss of the sea- son by visiting West Val- ley in the semifinals. Since then Red Bluff still hasn't won a playoff game, while over the years West Val- ley has picked up 14 more playoff wins and a couple of section titles to boot. CORNING (0-0) AT LAS PLU- MAS (0-1), 7:30 P.M. FRIDAY Without playing a game last week Corning moved from being unranked to ranked fifth in the Divi- sion III media poll thanks to Red Bluff blasting Cen- tral Valley. The Cardinals have played and beaten Las Plumas in each of the past six years, the last four all season openers, and out- scored the Thunderbirds 251-25 during that span. Still the Thunderbirds have shown improvement over the years and hope to push for a playoff spot this year. Those hopes took a bit of a hit last week when they turned the ball over five times in a 32-19 loss to Marysville. Quarterback J.J. Diaz and Robert Daley, also a standout linebacker, each rushed for more than a 100 yards in the Thunder- birds' Wing-T-Pistol hy- brid. It should be business as usual for Corning. They'll be undersized, but they know their schemes and stick to them well. Like usual there's a couple of standouts wear- ing red and black. Alex Davila went over 1,000 rushing yards last year as a sophomore. Chance Nelson went for 973 and returns as the se- nior leader. Nelson is an all-sec- tion preseason team pick at safety. COOL NAME OF THE WEEK West Valley senior line- man Angus Bundy. ELK CREEK (0-1) AT MERCY (0-1), 1 P.M. SATURDAY With a limited roster the Warriors figuratively played their guts out last week in a loss to Redding Christian. Several Mercy players were seen vomiting dur- ing the game following long touchdown runs or on the sidelines. Macho football props for that, but here's hoping the pre-game snacks stay down this week. Elk Creek was shut out 34-0 by Happy Camp last week. Both teams are in the same league, but this game won't count in the California-South league standings. The two teams are scheduled to meet again Oct. 24 at Elk Creek, with that game counting for league. PIGSKIN PROGNOSTICA- TION Redding Record Searchlight sports scribe and all-around nice guy T.J. Holmes is hosting a high school football pick 'em contest this week complete with a media di- vision. This not-so-humble journalist would like to report he went 10-2 in Week 1 to tie KCNR's Nate Abaurrea as the best me- dia selector. We'll see how long that lasts. TWITTER FOLLOWS Other games to follow Friday night include Lassen at Pleasant Valley, Central Valley at Shasta and Oro- ville at Paradise. Rocklin's Whitney vis- its Enterprise and Chico is in Brentwood to take on Liberty. Sutter hosts Novato on Saturday evening. Rogers also added five aces and three blocks as the Bulldogs evened their season record to 1-1. Vanesa Cota provided 24 assists in the match. Gilsa Castellon had 10 digs. Cota and Castellon each had three aces. Los Molinos has its home opener at 7 p.m. to- night against Paradise Ad- ventist Academy. MERCY 3, PARADISE ADVEN- TIST ACADEMY 0 PAA was swept by Mercy on Tuesday in Red Bluff. Mercy won 25-19, 25-15, 25-10. The Lady Warriors head to Hamilton for the Lady Brave Invitational begin- ning Thursday. CORNING 3, UNIVERSITY PREP 1 The Lady Cardi- nals are also scheduled for the Lady Brave Invitational after dispatching visiting U-Prep 25-11, 19-25, 25-15, 27-25 Tuesday. Corning is off to a 2-0 start. Before the Hamilton trip Corning was scheduled to visit Orland on Wednesday night. Tennis CHICO 6, RED BLUFF 3 The Lady Spartans lost their Eastern Athletic League opener Tuesday. Aislyn Lair beat Morgan Henry 6-2, 6-3 in No. 2 sin- gles and Tina Ortega won her match 6-0, 6-2 over Tina Laughlin. Ortega and partner Cait- lyn Igarta picked up a win in doubles for Red Bluff 10-3 over Henry and Sam Wheeler. Red Bluff (1-1, 0-1) visits Foothill on Sept. 9. PREP ROUNDUP Corning, LM, Mercy all winners Bochy said. "They play hard, even though they had injuries. They've had guys with good years, and they're tough here. There's nothing worse than when you think you should beat a club. They're major league players." The names are not the familiar ones such as Tu- lowitzki, Gonzalez and Cuddyer. Instead, it was emerging young players Nolan Arenado and Corey Dickerson doing most of the damage to Ryan Vogel- song's line on a day when he tied a career-high by al- lowing eight earned runs. Christian Bergman gave up nine hits, but the rookie al- lowed just two runs while outpitching Vogelsong. The Giants led 2-1 head- ing into the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Rock- ies' aggressive approach against Vogelsong paid off with two big rallies. Vogel- song walked Josh Rutledge with two outs in the fifth and then gave up a single to Justin Morneau. Are- nado hit a first-pitch fast- ball just over the wall in left for a three-run homer. Dickerson got a first-pitch curveball and lofted a high fly to left that originally looked like an out but kept carrying on a 90-degree day in Denver, giving him a second homer. "I made the pitch I wanted to Arenado — he just got enough of it to get it over the fence," Vogel- song said.
