It’s Wednesday and the nation’s default deadline is drawing near. Will our country declare bankruptcy? Well, we hope not. Even though we usually talk about “up and coming” things in our community newspaper, I think I would be remiss not to share my thoughts about everything extreme that is happening in our community, state and nation. Now, I’m not just talking about the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition reality show that recently impacted our community. That event will guarantee the Fayetteville The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition event served as the perfect crescendo to the opening of the North Carolina State Veterans Park and Fayetteville’s winning three- peat designation as an All-America City. community has its ultimate 15 minutes of fame, but at what cost? However, it was exciting and uplifting and demonstrated the true heart and sensitivity of Cumberland County residents. And, the timing was perfect. The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition event served as the perfect crescendo to the opening of the North Carolina State Veterans Park and Fayetteville’s winning three-peat designation as an All-America City. All of these great accomplishments and events have been added to my list of extremes. Some of my list isn’t quite as joyful: • Extreme heat • Extreme government • Extreme taxes • Extreme tax credits • Extreme traffi c • Extreme unemployment • Extreme gas prices Not to be left out are the extreme concerns I have over the way our nation is being managed. Don’t think I’m just talking Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Thursday July 28 Friday July 29 Saturday July 30 about President Obama. He is only the disappointing leader of the Clown Parade that consists of Republicans, Democrats, Independents and Tea partiers who, with their self righteous agendas and uncompromising stubbornness, are all mapping the parade route to America’s “dysfunction junction” destination. Our government is broken. This is an extreme injustice to all Americans. We are broken because of a rash of extreme irresponsibility by our governmental leaders. Our nation deserves better. As a small business owner, I experience every day the ultimate joy of participating in the American Dream. Now, with unemployment over 9 percent, and a sick national economy, my company sacrifi ces and struggles to keep other businesses solvent. All, while our trusted politicians continue to be stubborn, indecisive and wallow in this irresponsible folly. Finger pointing has become the norm. At this reading, if our country is not yet in default, I urge you to get involved, to sound off. Get loud and vocal about the expectations of our political leaders at all levels. We cannot continue to operate our city, county, state or nation on a business-as-usual basis. So, let’s get extreme where it really counts. Get involved! Urge your representatives to do the right things, for the right reasons and accept nothing less than aggressive, responsible leadership. Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina and America deserve nothing less. Thank you for reading Up & Coming Weekly. BILL BOWMAN, Publisher, Up & Coming Weekly, COMMENTS?
