6B Daily News – Tuesday, July 26, 2011 Selling sister Dear Annie: My son and I, on pretty substan- tial evidence, believe that my grandson is not only doing drugs but selling them, and was also selling his 14-year- old sister to his friends for sex. My grandson is 19. His father threw him out of the house, and he left without taking any clothes or other belong- ings. He says he doesn’t need them. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar These are both loved chil- dren who went to a religious grade school. But once they attended a public high school, somehow things went terribly wrong. My granddaughter is beautiful and bright, but is now sullen and uncommunicative. We all believed these kids were sweet, loving and good, and are stunned and heartsick. They have already been to a coun- selor. What else can we do? — Worried Grandmother Dear Grandmother: Please don’t blame the high school. Plenty of kids attend public schools, and they don’t turn out like your grandson. There’s not much you can do about a legal adult who no longer lives at home. His par- ents can report his drug and sex-trade business to the police if they so choose. Or they can urge him to get into rehab, although he doesn’t seem ready to make changes. Your grand- daughter, however, should con- tinue with her counseling. She may wish to press charges against her brother. She has been sexually abused and will need ongoing help. Suggest to your son that he contact RAINN (rainn.org) at 1-800-656-HOPE (1- 800-656-4673). Dear Annie: We recently received a wedding invitation for a relative on my wife’s side, and it was addressed to ‘‘The Smith Family.’’ It is being held at a rather upscale location, but is within driving distance. Besides the two children we have together, I have teenage children from my first mar- riage. Is it safe to assume they are included as guests? — Just Wondering Dear Just: If the teenage children live with you, chances are they are included. But it’s never safe to make assumptions like these. Call the bride’s fam- ily and ask. Dear Annie: ‘‘Help’’ said his adult daughter and wife were ‘‘enmeshed’’ and he was tired of the daughter’s never- ending phone calls. You didn’t have much sympathy and urged him to leave it alone. Maybe that was the best response, but shouldn’t there be some limit to the time one’s spouse spends talking on the phone, especially if it is sap- ping the life out of the mar- riage? My wife, ‘‘Doris,’’ is close to her mother and sister — too close if you ask me. They both call multiple times a day, and Doris never fails to answer. She says ‘‘it’s not polite’’ or ‘‘it might be an emergency.’’ Add in the occasional call from other family members and friends, and Doris is on the phone at least five hours a day and longer on weekends. Calls are rarely shorter than 30 min- utes. As a result, I am lucky to get five minutes of uninterrupt- ed time with her. I can’t tell you how many conversations, family dinners, vacations, walks and, yes, love- making sessions have been spoiled by incoming phone calls. We haven’t watched a TV show together for years because I got tired of taking four hours to get through a two- hour movie. I spend most of my time doing things on my own while Doris yaks. I’ve proposed every compro- mise I can think of, but realized long ago that nothing was going to change. Doris is the sweetest person I know, and I won’t leave her over this. But had I known this was going to be my life, I never would have married her. — Always on Hold Dear Always: It’s too bad Doris doesn’t realize the dam- age she has done to your rela- tionship. Show her this letter — or better yet, call her. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. GOTT: My letter has nothing to do with a medical prob- lem — just a response to something I read in your column today. Kudos to you for responding to the grammar question the way you did (agreement of pronouns in gender and number). Sadly, it has become a widespread habit these days to refer to a person of unspecified gender as “they.” I’m glad you stick to your guns and use “he” and “she” as traditional grammar requires. DEAR DR. GOTT: I have no medical issue to discuss. I simply want to offer my sincere thanks for your recent reply to a reader who proposed that you use the grammatically incorrect “they” instead of the proper “he or she” that you use. I am also one who refuses to bow to modern soci- ety’s laxity. I admire you sticking to your principles! DEAR DR. GOTT: Thank you, thank you for addressing one of my pet peeves — the incorrect use of a singular antecedent and a plural pronoun. As a former Eng- lish teacher, I despair when I read and see the mangling of the lan- guage. In addition to your excel- lent grammar, your column is a fine source of intelligent advice. DEAR DR. GOTT: Thank you for your comments about correct grammar usage. Adults in the country sound uneducated with their “me and him went” or “was you going,” etc. I pride myself on using correct grammar but feel like a dinosaur when I read the newspaper or listen to TV. DEAR READERS: Dr. Peter Gott To be totally honest, I wasn’t sure anyone would read that question. My column has to fill a specific slot, so I must keep it close to a certain number of words. That particular day I was a little short and needed what I refer to as a “filler,” something brief and easy to answer, and this question fit the bill. I celebrated my 76th birthday in June, so I grew up in a time when grammar really did matter. I was pleasantly surprised to receive all of your emails regard- ing this little filler question. I am glad to know that I’m not the only one who maintains that grammar is important. Thank you all for writing. DEAR DR. GOTT: I have dry burping (no acid taste ever) 30 times a day, five or six burps each time. I am on digoxin for a rapid and irregular heart rate. Could my heart condition have anything to do with the excessive dry burp- ing? It happens any time of day, whether my stomach is empty or after I have eaten. I am an 85- year-old female. DEAR READER: Your heart Landscape mulch may pose fire hazard Landscape mulch provides many benefits to a garden, but people living in wildfire-prone areas should be careful about the type of mulch they use around their homes. Embers landing on combustible mulch may set the mulch on fire and lead the fire to the house, warns a University of California Cooperative Extension advisor. "We know that the zone within about 5 feet of the home is very important to home survival during a wildfire," said Steve Quarles, UC Cooperative Extension advi- sor who studies wood perfor- mance and durability. "We call this near-home zone the ‘noncom- bustible or low combustible zone.'" Certain woody vegetation, such as juniper, shouldn't be placed near the home, he said. “Information from this study will help individuals select mulch products for use in this critical area in order to further reduce the vulnerability of their home to wildfires," Quarles said. There are two categories of mulches: organic and inorganic. Organic mulches are usually plant materials such as pine needles, wheat straw, pine bark nuggets of various sizes, shredded western red cedar and redwood bark, wood chips from recycled pallets or wildfire fuel reduction projects and cocoa shells but also include ground and shredded rubber. Inor- ganic mulches are non-plant materials such as rock, gravel and brick chips. Organic and inorganic mulches vary considerably in terms of size, shape, texture and parent material, all of which can influence their combustibility. Quarles and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension natural resource specialist Ed Smith, in collaboration with the Carson City Fire Department, Nevada Tahoe Conservation Dis- trict and the Natural Resource Conservation Service, tested the combustibility of eight types of mulches. After exposing the mulch to summer weather for 12 weeks, the scientists ignited each type, then evaluated the flame height, rate of fire spread and tem- perature above the mulch bed. With the exception of the com- posted wood chips, all of the mulch treatments readily began flaming. Composted wood chips smoldered, but produced very lit- tle flame. Fire spread the fastest in shredded rubber, pine needles and shredded western red cedar. Quarles recommends not using any organic mulch within 5 feet of a house located in wildfire prone areas. Instead, place non-com- bustibles such as rock, pavers, brick chips or well-irrigated, low- combustible plants such as lawn or flowers closest to the house. The more combustible mulches should be used more than 30 feet from the home. Quarles and Smith have pub- lished a manual comparing the relative combustibility of the eight mulch treatments and their recom- mendations for use. Gott is a retired physician and the author of several books, including “Live Longer, Live Better,”“Dr.Gott’s No Flour, No Sugar Diet” and “Dr. Gott’s No Flour, No Sugar Cookbook,”which are available at most bookstores or online. His website is www.AskDrGottMD.com. condition is likely atrial fibrilla- tion, a condition that causes skipped beats and a rapid heart rate. I don’t believe it is the cause of your excessive burping; how- ever, your medication may be. Digoxin can cause nau- sea, vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia (loss of appetite). Most individuals associate these symp- toms with stomach upset that can also produce excess gas. Burping and belching (known as eructa- tion) is not listed as a side effect; however, it is my belief that if digoxin can cause nausea and other side effects, it can likely cause your problem as well. Other possibilities include your diet, gastroe- sophageal reflux disease (which does not have to create heartburn or an acid taste in the mouth), other medications you may be on, or other gastrointestinal disorders. I suggest you speak with your doctor regarding your con- cerns. Perhaps a change in med- ication or dosage, or a referral to a gastroenterologist, is called for.
