Thefilmedver- sion of Noah is a produced version of the Biblical story of the Great Flood, well acted and well written. And it tears the very heart from the real- ity portrayed in the Word of God. Dan- iel Patrick Moynihan fa- mously declared everyone is entitled to his own opin- ion but nobody is entitled to his own facts. If a film producer wants to tell a story — any story — he is welcome to any way that seems good to him. But he is not welcome to tell his story and claim it is really some other story on which the copyright was estab- lished millenia ago. Such a producer is a cinematic fraud. The Genesis account of the Flood depicts a God who tells Noah in great de- tail how to build the ark; the cinematic Noah tries to contact God repeatedly and receives only silence. Noah's three sons are all married and planning fu- ture generations in Gen- esis; God actually com- mands them to multiply in Genesis 9. But the movie Noah believes God intends humanity to end with the deaths of his own family; he lets one fiancé die and threatens to kill the off- spring of the only mar- ried son. The most seri- ous about-face in the film is having Noah and his family worship the ser- pent. In the Genesis ac- count the serpent in the garden is the enemy of all life and the usurper who would steal God's throne out from under Him if he could. In other words the film presents nothing orig- inal in itself. It is merely a darkside rendering of the antithesis of the Biblical story. And I will say again the producer is welcome to tell his own original story if he will, but to simply counterfeit the Bible is noth- ing less than fraud and nothing more than lying under cover of the art form. My purpose here is not to make a case for the truth of the Bible; that case has been made. But I would make a case for let- ting the Bible — or any lit- erary work — speak for it- self without people who do not believe it presuming to re-write it to suit them- selves or their need for self-justification. This is a matter of integrity — ar- tistic or otherwise. "But" — some would ar- gue — "how much differ- ence does it make, these details of the story you cite in your second paragraph." It makes the difference be- tween a God who loves and a God who hates, be- tween a God who makes provision for the continu- ation of humanity despite the trainwreck they have made of His creation and a God who apparently wants all human life destroyed. (God never does tell Noah to show mercy to his grandchild; Noah is sim- ply unable to complete the killing.) It is the difference between a God who longs to communicate and have intimacy with His peo- ple — and has provided a means to that end — and a God who broods in silence over the men and women scurrying about trying to avoid His wrath like some gigantic spider contem- plating the next meal of its helpless prey below. Do we want a God who loves and reaches out to us despite our persis- tence in provoking Him by our treatment of each other? Or would we pre- fer a God who obviously hates the very people He has made, giving us first the silent treatment and then a cosmic waterboard- ing? More to the point — for this piece — will we let the competing versions of God's story stand against one another that the better prevail in the marketplace of ideas, or do we honor the one that masquerades as the other? Of course the ultimately guilty parties are not the film producers but credu- lous people who — for the most part — claim to be Christian, but are so Bib- lically illiterate they have no idea whether they see truth or fiction when God is depicted on-screen. The solution is simple enough: Read your Bible before watching a movie that claims to tell you what it says. The Apostle Peter tells us to be always ready to account for our faith. That is for the sake of those who have none, but equally for those who be- lieve we do. Jesus says — Matthew 10 — those who acknowledge Him on this planet will be acknowl- edged by Him in the pres- ence of His Father; those who don't, not so much. This can be construed as a threat to the unfaith- ful, but it is really a prom- ise of never ending devo- tion. The Son says again — Matthew 28 — He will never ever leave us behind or alone. But it all kinda begins with a commitment to truth. MOVIE Corning church to screen 'God's Not Dead' By Krysta Fauria Associated Press HUNTINGTON BEACH Over the long months that Victo- ria Mitchell lived in her car with her infant daughter, there was one bright spot in her life: doing laundry. Every month, Mitchell would trek to a local laun- dromat and take advantage of Laundry Love, a growing faith-driven movement that helps those who are home- less or financially strug- gling by washing their dirty clothes for free. Amid the comforting routine of fluffing and fold- ing, volunteers befriend their patrons and often find ways to help that go beyond free soap and quarters. Mitchell, for example, now has a job and place to live after the Laundry Love volunteers pooled their money to help her family rent a starter apartment. They have also watched her daughter Jessica grow from a newborn to a curly- haired toddler. "You're not just checking a box to give a donation. You're spend- ing the whole evening with these people and getting your hands dirty and it's intimate — you're doing people's laundry," said Lu- zAnna Figueroa, who vol- unteers at the group's Hun- tington Beach chapter and has grown close to Mitchell and her daughter. Richard Flory, a religion expert from the University of Southern California who has studied Laundry Love extensively, said Mitch- ell is just one example of how the organization can profoundly impact people through something as sim- ple as washing their clothes. "It's an opportunity for people to live out their faith out in a concrete way, in a frankly elegantly simple model where you do some- thing that's necessary for people who don't have the means to do it for them- selves," Flory said. The movement began about 10 years ago with a small Christian church in Ventura and has since spread to more than 100 locations throughout the country to people from all faiths. Christian Kassoff started the Huntington Beach chapter two years ago with his wife, Shannon. On a re- cent warm summer night, Kassoff glanced around the laundromat and smiled at the dozens of people who depend on him and the other volunteers for clean laundry each month. Classic hits from Da- vid Bowie and The Clash blasted through speakers as patrons pushed around wheeled metal baskets full of laundry and stuffed loads of dirty clothes — some not washed for weeks — into in- dustrial-sized machines. Those doing their laun- dry also lined up outside to eat their fill of tacos as volunteers prayed inside before starting the night's washing. David Clarke, who has been coming to the laun- dromat for four months af- ter losing his job as an aero- space machinist, estimates he's saved $200 on laun- dry in that time, but said he gets a lot more from the washing sessions than sav- ings.
