Todd Garr “Through interactive education programs like 'Start Smart, we help California's teen drivers learn to make good choices behind the wheel.” The "Start Smart" program is a free, two- hour interactive driver safety class for teens and their parents or guardians. During the course, officers and speakers illustrate the critical responsibilities of driving and collision avoidance techniques. SC Parents are also remind- ed of their responsibili- ty to help teach their new driver and model good behavior. The class will be held at the Tehama County Sheriff ’s Department, 22840 Antelope Boule- vard. According to the Integrated Traffic Records System, within the CHP's jurisdiction, from 2006 through 2008, there were 34,086 fatal and injury colli- sions involving at least one driver between the ages of 15 and 19. These collisions result- ed in 895 motorists’ deaths and 53,121 peo- ple injured. Statewide statistics show that 88,270 fatal and injury collisions occurred involving at least one teen driver, resulting in 1,488 people killed and 137,307 victims injured. “Keeping the young drivers in our communi- ty safe is a big job,” Garr said. “If you know of a family with young drivers, help us spread the word about this life- saving class. Encourage them to attend our Start Smart class. You just might save a life.” Parents and teenagers can reserve a spot in the July 28 "Start Smart" class by contacting the Red Bluff Area CHP office at 527-2034. This program is sup- ported by a grant award- ed by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
