CHICO Acommunitykick- off event for the 2014-15 Book in Common will be held 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, in the Chico City Plaza. This year's book, "The Distance Between Us" by Reyna Grande, is a highly acclaimed memoir about the experience of migrants from Mexico to the United States. Students at California State University, Chico and Butte College as well as other community members will read this year's book during the 2014-15 aca- demic year. The purpose of the Book in Common pro- gram is to promote discus- sion and understanding of important issues facing the broader community. Speakers at the kickoff event will include Kimberly Perry, president of Butte College; Scott Gruendl, mayor of Chico; and Mau- reen Kirk, Butte County su- pervisor. Bill Loker, dean of Undergraduate Education at CSU, Chico, will be mas- ter of ceremonies. Student readers will read brief passages from the book as part of the event, and music will be provided by Los Caballitos de la Can- cion, a local Latin music band. Tables will be set up dur- ing the event staffed by lo- cal organizations con- cerned with immigration issues and Mexican Amer- ican life and culture. BOOK IN COMMON Kickoffeventsetfor'The Distance Between Us' The new owners of Sky River Music store, Kevin an Melissa Wendland, in- troduce Margaret Glaspy, alumni of Mercy, Gerber and Antelope schools is home from New York to do a show 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Sky River Music. Margaret has been in New York studying music and performing for seven years. She did her last at home show four years ago at the State Theatre. Now at home again to entertain as a kick off for the Wendlands in their new store. Opening for Margaret, well known in the north state with his jazz trio from Muscle Shoals, will be Mumblefinger. Meet and greet with Mar- garet at 6 p.m. at the Enjoy the Store, 7 p.m. the show starts at the music store, 7:45 p.m. dessert at inter- mission, 8 p.m. Margaret performs. CONCERT Ma rg ar et G la sp y to perform at music shop The North State Sym- phony is scheduled to per- form "Embark" in Chico Sept. 20 and Redding Sept. 21. Featured soloist Ryan Kuster sang in the North State Symphony's perfor- mance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. He will sing a selection of favorite opera arias in this season-open- ing concert. The symphony's first music director candidate will fill out the program with the most impressive pieces in his or her reper- toire. Shows are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20, with a free pre-concert talk at 6:30 p.m., at the Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall, Chico. The Sept. 21 show is set for 2 p.m., with pre-show talk at 1 p.m., at the Cascade Theatre in Redding. Advance tickets are $36 premium, $6 students and children. NORTH STATE SYMPHONY 'Embark' coming to Chico and Redding REDDING Classic '70s pro- gressive rock band Kansas is scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 at the Cascade Theatre in Red- ding. The band's hits include "Dust in the Wind" and "Carry On Wayward Son," and the band remains a fix- ture of classic rock, reach- ing whole new audiences. CONCERT Kansas to perform in Redding next month Tehama Concert Series announces the lineup of national and international artists performing in Red Bluff as part of the group's 2014-2015 season. Since 1938, our organi- zation has brought a wide variety of top-quality en- tertainment to Red Bluff. With this coming season, it will carry on that great tradition. Season-ticket pricing is $60 for adults and $15 for students younger than 25. The $125 family package includes two adults and any number of students liv- ing at home. Each season ticket grants admission to all six of the following con- certs: Vivace—Sep.25 Vivace is an operatic pop vocal quartet based in Vancouver, Canada. They have toured exten- sively through the US and Canada and performed at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Vivace is a power- ful and stirring vocal quar- tet. Each singer brings a particular element to the group. Combined, they turn out a rich and colorful blend of sound that is ex- clusively their own. Vivace has a diverse and deep rep- ertoire. Paul Posnak — Oct. 22 Pianist Dr. Paul Posnak is noted for playing both twentieth-century Amer- ican music and European romantic classics. His transcriptions of the orig- inal improvisations of Ger- shwin, "Fats" Waller, and "Jelly Roll" Morton have gained him international attention. He presents these jazz classics along- side the works of Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and De- bussy. Since 2005, Dr. Pos- nak has served as a judge for the Grammy Awards. He will be performing on the State Theatre's new 7-foot Schimmel grand pi- ano. North State Symphony Holiday Concert — Dec. 13 The North State Sym- phony's Baroque Ensem- ble, a sub-group of the full symphony, performs spe- cial Christmas music each year at the State Theatre in Red Bluff. Acknowledged as Ire- land's finest tenor at the Dublin National Con- cert Hall's Silver Jubilee in 2006, Mr. Kearns is a respected ambassador of Ireland and has presented the music of his homeland across the globe. Two-time Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey will take time out from filming the third sea- son of the Netflix hit series to show off his vocal tal- ents at a one-night-only gala concert Sept. 29 at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C. The concert will benefit schol- arships and grants for emerging artists. Spacey, who played singer Bobby Darin in "Beyond the Sea," prom- ises some Billy Joel songs, some Simon & Garfunkel, a bit of Sinatra, plenty of swing, a few stories and a surprise guest or two, all backed by a 40-piece or- chestra. "You never know what I might come up with," he said. Tickets, still available, are $104. Proceeds from the show will help fund the Kevin Spacey Foundation, which recently chose Pace Uni- versity in New York to be the first institution of higher education in the United States to receive its scholarships and fund- ing support. Five incoming Pace stu- dents who received the first U.S. scholarships will start this fall and 10 oth- ers will receive funds to support travel expenses to perform abroad. Spac- ey's foundation, with $500,000 in scholarships and $200,000 in grants, also helps students at Re- gent's University London.
