Sophomores Bryanna DeLuicia and Caitlin McCoy, a 2013 Corning Union High School graduate, battle for the ball in Thursday's final camp practice. ByRickSilva ParadisePost @Post_RickSilva on Twitter BUTTE VALLEY The Butte Col- lege women's soccer team hopes to kick off a successful 2014 sea- son when it takes on Mendocino College at Butte College on Friday. And from the sounds of it, the Roadrunners are off to a good start, wrapping up their summer camp that accomplished what two of their sophomore leaders hoped they would. Co-captain and Paradise High grad Lauren LeDuc and last year's leading scorer Corning High School graduate Cynthia Ramirez, said their goal soon af- ter the season ended was to get everyone on the same page. "We really worked on that this year," said LeDuc. "Our number one goal this year was to make sure we were all friends." Rameriz said that all summer they worked on making the team more together on and off the field. "I am looking forward to more teamwork, more communication and hopefully more success in the end," Ramirez said. "Being there for each other and having each other's back." For his part, coach Tony Salin- dong, who is entering his ninth year as the Roadrunner head coach, doesn't like looking back at previous years, saying each team has its own identity, its own set of challenges and its own legacy to build. "What I would say is if they learned some valuable lessons from 2013 that they wanted to apply to this year on and off the field, that's certainly fantastic," he said. The Roadrunners are coming off a 7-9-5 record, where they fin- ished fourth in the Golden Valley Conference with a 3-4-5 record. TENNIS Lady Cardinals host Anderson in opener By Kristie Rieken The Associated Press HOUSTON Jeff Samardzija pitched eight solid innings and Josh Donald- son drove in three runs to lead the Oakland Athletics over the Houston Astros 8-2 Monday night. Samardzija (4-3) allowed six hits, two runs and tied a season high with 10 strikeouts to bounce back from a two-game skid in which he yielded 11 runs combined. The right-hander was 2-7 with the Chicago Cubs be- fore an early July trade. Josh Reddick hit a two-run homer and Donaldson had three hits after sitting out Sunday with a knee in- jury. Donaldson doubled twice for his first extra-base hits and RBIs in his last nine games. Reddick's 10th home run sailed into the seats in right field to push Oakland's lead to 3-0 in the fourth. Chris Carter hit an opposite-field, two-run homer in the eighth to pull the Astros within one, but the A's added five runs in the ninth to ex- tend the lead to 8-2. Scott Feldman (7-10) allowed seven hits and three runs in seven innings. The Astros couldn't string any- thing together against Samardzija through the first seven innings. They didn't have more than one hit in an inning until the eighth, when Jose Altuve singled before Carter's homer. Houston reliever Tony Sipp, who had allowed just 10 walks in his pre- vious 41 innings, walked all four bat- ters he faced in the ninth to push Oakland's lead to 4-2. Donaldson's bases-loaded double off Jose Veras sent two more home, and Derek Nor- ris wrapped up the scoring with a two-run single. Eric Sogard doubled to start the third and scored on Donaldson's first hit โ a two-out double โ to put Oakland up 1-0. Brandon Moss singled in the fourth before Reddick homered. Carter's 31 home runs rank third in the American League and his 18 homers and 44 RBIs since July 1 lead the majors. Altuve's hit gave him 179 this season, which leads the AL.
