When It Comes To Weight Loss Surgery, You Have Options. When It Comes To Helping You Choose, And Information. We Give You Options f Nancy Graceless by PITT DICKEY It takes a lot to offend me. But I allow to being offended by the entertainment- style coverage of the Casey Anthony murder trial. Unfortunately the other day while burrowing through cable TV land, I heard an ad for the Casey Anthony trial. It doesn’t matter which cable channel it was on, all the cable news channels have been salivating over and wallowing in the death of poor little Caylee Anthony. The ad that set me off was the one touting that cable network’s continuing live coverage of the “trial that has captivated America.” When I heard the term “captivated” used to describe the murder trial of a small child; like Huck Finn once said, “I was putrefi ed with astonishment.” Let us ponder the term “captivated” for a moment. The dictionary defi nes captivate as something that charms the Nancy Grace blowing off steam. Village Surgical Associates Has Been Named An American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence viewer. Are we at the briny level of civilization that the murder of a small child captivates or charms us? The networks think so. The death of a child translates into more viewers, more commercials and more profi ts for the media. The media loves a dead child, particularly a cute little white girl who goes missing for months and then fi nally is found dead. The captivating spectacle culminates with a ritual dissection of the defendant by the cable talking head during the trial. We get wall- to-wall talking heads pontifi cating about evidence, tactics and the defendant’s hairstyle. The legal commentators pretend, like Captain Renault in Casablanca to be “shocked, shocked” at the heinousness of the crime while off-camera they are dancing and prancing at the higher ratings and higher direct deposits they will receive because a child has been killed. The queen of the cable news Gorgons is Nancy Graceless who routinely spews her fake anger and outrage like a professional rassler threatening to tear the head off his next opponent. I keep hoping that one night her head will spin off on camera and green pea soup will explode out of her neck. In my heart of hearts, I know it won’t happen because she is faking it. If there were an Emmy for the most loathsome actor on TV, Nancy would win it, beating out Stewie of Family Guy by a landslide. Nancy Graceless’ mercantile attitude towards dead children reminds me of Dr. James Classen Dr. Leo Davidson If you are 100 lbs. or more overweight and want more information about bariatric surgical options (including gastric bypass, lap band and other procedures) please attend our upcoming educational forums: Wednesday, August 17th Wednesday, September 21st at 6:30 p.m. Cape Fear Valley Education Center For an appointment with Doctors Classen or Davidson or to reserve a seat at our FREE educational seminar, please call 910.323.2626 1841 Quiet Cove • Fayetteville, NC 28304 www.villagesurgical.com 6 UCW JULY 20-26, 2011 the Greek myth of Kronos eating his children. Like many West Virginians, Kronos was married to his sister, Rhea. They produced a son Zeus who ended up being the Big Cheese among the Greek gods. An oracle told Kronos to watch out because one day one of his children would replace him as head god. Kronos didn’t like that prospect, so he started eating his children as fast as Rhea could pop them out. Kronos chowed down on Demeter, Hera, Hades and Poseidon as soon as they were born. This was the fi rst documented case of male post partum depression. Rhea got tired of Kronos treating her kids like Big Macs. She got some good advice from her parents (who incidentally were also Kronos’ parents). When Rhea got pregnant again she skedaddled to Crete to have her baby whom she named Zeus. When Kronos demanded his Zeus baby burger, Rhea wrapped a rock in swaddling clothes and gave the rock to Kronos to eat. Kronos didn’t notice he was eating a rock and swallowed the fake baby. This doesn’t say much about Rhea’s cooking as Kronos mistook a rock for a baby. Zeus, being undigested, lived to grow up to adulthood. The experience left Zeus with some unresolved paternal issues. Zeus got his grandmother to fi x up a Mickey which Kronos drank. The Mickey caused Kronos to vomit up his previously eaten children plus the fake Zeus rock. Naturally, Zeus’ siblings were not happy about having been eaten by Dad. As predicted, they helped Zeus overthrow Kronos. The baby/rock went on to live with the Delphic oracle and was used as a cult object to predict the outcome of many famous battles and winning N.C. Educational Lottery numbers. Can you imagine the fake indignation that Nancy Graceless would have put on during a trial of Kronos for eating his children? It would have been a powerful thing to watch. Nancy could identify with Kronos because they were both in the same business of devouring children, but she would have spewed outrage nonetheless. Now that Caylee’s trial is over, poor Nancy has to wait until the next little girl is abducted and murdered so she can put on her show again. Once you can fake righteous indignation, the rest comes easy. More after these commercial messages. PITT DICKEY, Contributing Writer. COMMENTS? editor@upandcomingweekly.com WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM
