2B Daily News – Saturday, July 16, 2011 Religion Faith&Worship Church news Worship at River Park Churches are invited to come together for a Worship Ser- vice at Red Bluff River Park on Sunday, July 17. The com- bined worship service will include a youth worship band. Nueda Vida Pastor, Noe Villasenor, of the Red Bluff Ministerial Association will deliver the sermon. Local area vendors will be available for lunch or persons may bring their own picnic lunch. Children and Adult activities are planned for the afternoon. The event will occur from 10:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. The pub- lic is invited to join together with sponsoring churches in worship. Each person is encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs for seating. Churches that choose to attend, after their own service concludes, are also welcome. Voices of Faith: Is God fair? WORLD MAY BE UNFAIR The Rev. Holly McKissick, pastor of St. Andrew Chris- tian Church, Olathe, Kan.: Read the fine print on your homeowner's insurance policy: "Acts of God" — tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes and the like — aren't covered. Of course, many of us don't believe God "acts" in such a way, causing catastrophes and cancers, guiding events great and small. We live in an unfair world. Sometimes, that's attributable to human behavior. I knew that in first grade when the black girl sitting in front of me was unfairly blamed for taking my lunch money. Sometimes, it's just random. Natural disasters strike in patterns that carry no meaning. God does not cause the avalanche to bury unfaithful hikers, or the tornado to skip over the faithful. It's difficult to answer your question — is God fair — because underneath it are assumptions that do not fit my view of God. Rather than a God who acts in a controlling, coercive way, manipulating outcomes, my experience is that God acts, as process theologians describe, in a calling, per- suading and inviting way. For me, the more helpful question is whether we are fair. In the face of climate change, are we working to minimize environmental damage to vulnerable communities? Do we work for equity in employment and schools? That question is no easier, but at least it begins with a the- ology that makes sense to me, with a God who joins us to celebrate the gracious and mourn the tragic. ALL IS FAIR AND ORDERLY Rabbi Avi Weinstein, head of Jewish studies, Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy: "...execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates" (Zechariah 8:16) It is clear that if we are mandated by the Prophet to be equitable that God expects no less from himself. We also realize that often what is perceived as fair for one individual may seem egregiously unjust to another. Ultimate justice is something to which we aspire, but never realize. Once, long ago, I was attending a class given by Rabbi Benzion Brook, an ethical master in Jerusalem. He taught: Once a man was visiting a community for a weekend and attended Sabbath services. When it was time to honor people with Torah blessings, he noticed that the sexton seemed to be calling random people up without any regard to their age or their status. After the service, he went to com- plain about what he perceived as an unfair practice. The sex- ton said, "You have only been here one day, and you feel that there is no order here? Look, I have a list, and I make sure that everything is in order." Rabbi Brook turned to us and said, "We are only on this earth a short time. God, too, has a list, and everything is in order." God’s precious jewels: The beginning Precious people – that’s how I view Native Americans, and especial- ly the children. While some view Native Americans as inferior, I know that God sees each one as His cre- ation. He has planted gifting into their lives such as sensitivity for the arts and a deep appreciation for the beau- ty found in the mountains, desert lands and all of creation. God’s Pre- cious Jewels is a ministry to Native American Children and their families. We can’t change history and undo the wicked deeds done to any culture, but we can change today. I’m not going to write about casinos, money, or governmental help. There are var- ied opinions about those subjects, and sometimes anger. Any such assis- tance has not changed the over-all fact that among Native American people today there remains a high percentage of domestic violence, poverty, substance abuse, school dropout, rape, and often an absence of stable fathers within the family struc- ture. Little by little family life for Native Americans was torn apart. They were shuffled about like cattle and forced to move, resulting in much deterioration of their culture and their very existence. Because Native Americans are precious in God’s sight, and because they are our neighbors, living right here in America, we must not contin- ue to ignore their plight. They fight in our wars alongside all of us. Their wives and children still suffer with deep-seated problems. But we can help. I’m not talking about a hand out, but a hand up. And, the "hand up" should be for the babies, the children, the teens, the mothers, the fathers, and the grand- parents – for the entire family. God put it upon my heart in 2000 to establish God’s Precious Jewels. The plan was quite simplistic – go and give free Bibles to the Native Americans. I started by purchasing Bibles by the case, and with a few friends headed towards reservation land in Idaho. The first trip was rather interesting because I really did not know what I was doing, but only that I was to go. I left Star, Idaho, with two other ladies and we traveled to Lapwai, ID. Several churches were getting ready for a Vacation Bible School with Native American kids. They lacked gospel materi- als. My van was loaded to the ceiling with cases of Bibles and other gospel liter- ature. The Pastors were encouraged, for their prayers had been answered. In Plum- mer, ID we found a small church that was open, and introduced ourselves to the minister. He desper- ately needed Bibles, and this tall man was greatly moved. With his eyes filled with tears, he was encouraged beyond description. Plummer, ID is populated mostly with Native Ameri- cans. Pastor Cordel and his small con- gregation passed out about 300 of the Jesus DVD within the community, as well as giving out Bibles. The first trip was so exciting that we were soon off to Owhyee (Duck Valley) in Nevada where we left Bibles with two different churches. Since 2000 I’ve had the joy of giving out thousands of Bibles, DVDs, and many other types of gospel materials in five states. The purpose of the ministry is to come alongside Pastors that reach out beyond their church walls into reser- vation and tribal lands. Sometimes it is on the reservation and other times it is in a rancheria setting; some of the pastors are Native and some are Euro. Many casinos have Native home communities near-by. As the ministry developed I learned better ways of ministering. There is a need for in-depth planning, connecting with churches and Pastors in advance, finding out the lack or Saddle up for Saddle Ridge Ranch Vacation Bible School where kids will be ridin' the range and roundin' up questions like " What Is God's Plan For Me?" and "How Can I Be Like Jesus?" Set among the stunning vistas and wide-open spaces of Big Sky country, Saddle Ridge Ranch is a place where kids discover the answers are found in God's Word. During their evening at the ranch, kids will visit Wor- ship Rally Valley and the Bible Study Bunkhouse. Around the ranch they will also experience: Crafts at Blazing Star Stables, Music at Campfire Creek, Recre- Patricia Martin GodTalk need, determining if they have a desire for outreach, find- ing out their past outreach activities, connecting with Native Christians, visiting tribal offices and research- ing over-all community life. Each situation is dif- ferent, so each planned outreach is individualized. Often there are no churches ministering near tribal lands. Then the search begins for Christian Native Ameri- cans to help arrange for an outreach. Sometimes we have partnered with other ministries such as the Stitches Program out of Paradise. Their hot pink trailer opens up to a stage. They have full costumes like Disneyland charac- ters, a talking robot, lively music, games, prizes, candy, and most of all the gospel message is present- ed. I’ve been able to arrange as many as three ministries working together with God’s Precious Jew- els for special outreaches. We’ve had the joy of seeing families pray together to receive Jesus as Savior. Bibles, the Jesus DVD, the Gospel of John and more are always avail- able. God’s Precious Jewels, Inc. is a Christian non-profit ministry. The vision is to strengthen the arm of the church so that souls will be brought into the Kingdom of God. Let me help you begin ministering to Native Americans too. See our website at godspreciousjewels.info Patricia Martin is a missionary and evangelist and with the Assemblies of God. She is the founder of God's Precious Jewels, Inc., a ministry to Native American children and their families. The ministry provides Bibles and other Gospel literature in multiple states.
