"Their pitching staff is one of the best in base- ball, and they're showing it. And their lineup grinds out at-bats. They're kind of similar to us in a way. No one's going to come out and wow you. But at the same, 1-9 they are solid, outstand- ing hitters that just grind out at-bats and make pitch- ers work." The A's looked like they might escape with a split when they received a pair of gift runs in the sixth inning by virtue of center fielder Jarrod Dyson's dropped two-out fly ball that turned into a Josh Reddick RBI tri- ple. Reddick then scored on an Albert Callaspo sin- gle that gave Oakland a 3-2 lead, and Samardzija fol- lowed that up with a shut- down frame in the bottom of the sixth. But the Royals before he knew what hit him in the seventh. After getting the first out, Erik Kratz sin- gled to center and Chris- tian Colon doubled into the left field corner, and sud- denly Samardzija was out. In came Cook to face Dy- son and worked to a quick 0-2 count. But Dyson then slapped a ball into right to score one, and Nori Aoki followed with a first-pitch bullet down the right field line to score two more. Cook said he went with a changeup on Dyson and didn't locate it. "It's been my best pitch for awhile now, and it's been my put-away pitch to lefties and righties," Cook said. "Right pitch, bad mis- take. It's unfortunate, be- cause I felt pretty good. I told myself to miss down and I missed middle. That's really all there is to it. I had all the momentum in that at-bat, too." And Aoki? "I don't know, I made him look silly the other night on fastballs in," Cook said. "I tried to go in there again. I haven't looked at the film on it, but I thought it was a pretty decent pitch. Good piece of hitting, re- ally. That's a hot baseball team right now. That's why I'm so frustrated about that pitch to Dyson. You can't make mistakes like that when they're hot." Samardzija, meanwhile, said Cook never should have been put in that posi- tion in the first place. "After getting the first guy out, I need to put the next two guys away right there and get out guys back in the dugout," he said. After the Dyson and Aoki hits off Cook, the Royals subsequently pad- ded their lead when Billy Butler doubled home a pair of runners with two out against Oakland's fourth pitcher, Luke Gregerson. Samardzija (3-2 with the A's, 5-9 overall), surren- dered eight hits and four runs (three earned). He didn't walk a batter and struck out five. So are the A's wheels a bit wobbly after not only taking their lumps here, but losing shortstop Jed Lowrie to the disabled list in the process? Manager Bob Melvin isn't worried … yet. One point of concern is that the A's gave up too many two-strike hits in critical situations. A's FROMPAGE1 AUTORACING NASCAR Pure Michigan 400 Sprint Cup Series Practice: 5:30a.m.,ESPN2. The debate is on as to whether Man City has sprinkled its squad with enough star quality in the offseason to hold off the charge of its rivals behind them. Bolstering its defense with Eliaquim Mangala and Bacary Sagna and bulking up the midfield with Fernando and the ag- ing Frank Lampard looks sensible but hasn't set the pulses racing. To some, there are shades of the summer of 2012 when City manager Roberto Mancini failed to make any jaw-dropping signings after a title suc- cess, allowing Man United to seize back the initiative and eventually oust City as champions. Mancini was fired as a result. There is the argument, however, that City's squad — especially in attack — was strong enough as it is and simply needed fine- tuning as Manuel Pel- legrini has done. Playing away first up against Newcastle, whose offseason signings have been shrewd, will be a good test of City's creden- tials. Another new era at United For the second straight season, a new era at Man United begins with a Premier League opener against Swansea. Twelve months ago, a 4-1 win over the Welsh club proved to be a false barometer for United and its then-new coach David Moyes, whose tenure went downhill from there and he was sacked before the sea- son was out. Expect things to be dif- ferent under the more ex- perienced Van Gaal. For starters, Wayne Rooney has been appointed cap- tain and will be part of a new 3-5-2 formation that Van Gaal favors and has worked well in preseason for United, which has won all of its six friendlies. The defense is a worry ahead of this weekend, though, with the new sign- ing at left back, Luke Shaw, ruled out for a month, cen- ter back Jonny Evans also set to miss out and Ne- manja Vidic, Rio Ferdi- nand and Patrice Evra all departed. Striker Robin van Persie is also lacking match fit- ness and might not start. Chelsea looks complete with Costa With Diego Costa signed up, it's difficult to find a weakness in Chelsea's title challenge. Jose Mourinho craved a lethal striker last sea- son, one which Chelsea finished without a tro- phy mainly because of the lack of goals from Samuel Eto'o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba up front. Mourinho acted quickly this summer to snap up Costa for 32 million pounds ($53 million) af- ter his brilliant season at Spanish champion Atletico Madrid, and it could prove to be a bargain. "This is the player we were waiting for since last season," Mourinho said af- ter Costa's two goals in a 2-0 friendly win over Real Sociedad on Tuesday. With Costa up front and fellow new signing Cesc Fabregas in midfield, Chel- sea shouldn't be short of goals this season — start- ing at promoted Burnley on Monday. Optimism at Arsenal The high-profile arrival of Alexis Sanchez, the feel- good factor carrying over from last season's FA Cup success and a 3-0 win over Man City in the Commu- nity Shield last weekend has Arsenal feeling opti- mistic going into its opener against Crystal Palace on Saturday. The London club was top of the standings for longer than any of its ri- vals last season but fell away after a strong start, with injuries to key players like Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil taking their toll. The squad looks even stronger for this cam- paign — especially fol- lowing Sanchez's sign- ing from Barcelona after an impressive World Cup with Chile. "He's got pace, he's got that special technique, his feet are so, so quick. He's a bit cheeky on the pitch," Arsenal captain Mikel Ar- teta said of Sanchez. "I think the fans are very ex- cited and I think they are right because we've signed some player here." Arsenal, which sent out a statement by over-run- ning City at Wembley Sta- dium on Sunday, hasn't finished higher than third since the 2004-05 season. Liverpool and the others The post-Luis Suarez era at Liverpool begins at home to Southampton, whose summer fire sale of top players has seen three head to Anfield — Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren. Lovren is likely to be the only one to start on Sun- day, with Liverpool appear- ing in great shape after thrashing German power Borussia Dortmund 4-0 in a friendly last weekend. Tottenham's first match under Mauricio Pochettino is at West Ham and Ever- ton visits Leicester, one of three promoted side along with Burnley and Queens Park Rangers. Soccer FROM PAGE 1 Manfred has been in- volved in baseball since 1987, starting as a law- yer with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius who assisted in collective bargaining. He became MLB's executive vice president for labor relations and human re- sources in 1998, received an expanded role of ex- ecutive vice president of economics and league af- fairs in 2012 and last Sep- tember was promoted to chief operating officer. He helped lead negotia- tions for baseball's last three labor contracts with players and the joint drug agreement that was instituted in 2002 and has been repeatedly strengthened. Werner, 64, was the controlling owner of the San Diego Padres from 1990-94, triggering fan criticism for the pay- roll-paring departures of Fred McGriff, Gary Sheffield, Tony Fernan- dez, Randy Myers and Benito Santiago. He has been part of the Red Sox ownership group since 2002, a period that in- cluded three World Se- ries titles. While working at ABC, he helped develop Robin Williams' "Mork & Mindy" and later was ex- ecutive producer of "The Cosby Show" and "Rose- anne" at The Carsey-Wer- ner Co.
