The Spartans also saw Shaffer get ejected for roughing Chico's place kicker and suspended for the Week 7 homecoming game. But by midweek all of that was in the past. Chico forfeited the win after it was determined a transfer student was inel- igible to play against Red Bluff. With the forfeited win, Red Bluff's record was raised to 4-2 along with its playoff chances. Corning took advantage of some good fortune as well, beating an Orland team 27-13 that was with- out its star quarterback Ty- ler Batchelder. The win ele- vated Corning to 5-1 on the season. Mercy met Loyal- ton for the second time in three weeks, but the visi- tors got their revenge with a 20-0 shutout of the War- riors. Los Molinos lost 48-7 at Maxwell. WEEK 7 With the momen- tum of the forfeited loss, the Spartans rallied back from down two scores in the second half to win a nail-biting homecoming game 27-26 over Wheat- land and improve to 5-2 on the season. Filling in for Shaffer, Daniel Koe- nig provided 87 rushing yards and the game-win- ning score. In a rare situa- tion, Wheatland appeared to win the game on a last- second Hail Mary, but the touchdown was called back for an illegal lateral. Still, the penalty gave the Pirates an untimed down and another crack at a mir- acle finish before the Spar- tans prevailed. Unfortu- nately, it turned out to be Red Bluff's last win of the season. Meanwhile, up in Shasta Lake, Corning was thumped 37-0 by Central Valley. The Bulldogs' of- fense got working, but Los Molinos still fell at home 48-33 to University Prep. Mercy lost on the road at Herlong 54-37. WEEK 8 Corning re- bounded from the ugly de- feat the week prior with a 42-7 win over Anderson for homecoming. Chayce Ma- day provided two touch- downs and 81 yards on five carries. Red Bluff's grasp on a playoff spot started to slip away when the Spar- tans failed to score in the second half and lost 35-28 to visiting Pleasant Valley. Greg Dufour threw three touchdown passes in the loss including a pair to Walker Dodero. Visiting Chester hammered Los Molinos 61-0. It would be the last time the Bulldogs took the field for the re- mainder of the year. Mercy met Herlong for the second straight week and upped its playoff hopes with a 51-16 home win. Guerrero scored five rushing touch- downs for the Warriors. WEEK 9 Davila needed just six carries to rack up 176 rushing yards as Corn- ing blew out Yreka 49-6 to all but cement a play- off spot. Davila scored on rushes of 60 and 97 yards. Nelson and Joe Aguirre also topped the century mark for Corning. In Par- adise, injuries continued to mount for the Spartans, who lost 56-21 to a Bobcats team that was looking to avenge Red Bluff's upset of the team a year ago. Los Molinos was forced to for- feit a game for the third consecutive year and took a record book loss to Portola. Mercy was on the right side of a forfeit from West- wood and the win clinched the Warriors (4-6) a play- off berth. WEEK 10 All four Tehama County schools suffered defeats. In a game where the winner earned the fi- nal playoff spot, Foothill battered visiting Red Bluff 48-14 to end the Spartans' season at 5-5 and 1-5 in the Eastern Athletic League. The lone win came from the forfeit from Chico. Corn- ing lost 37-6 at West Val- ley and finished the season at 7-3 and 3-2 in the North- ern Athletic League. Corn- ing earned the No. 5 seed in the Division 2 playoffs. Los Molinos forfeited its fi- nal game to Biggs to finish an 0-8 season. Mercy trav- eled to Dunsmuir for the first round of the 8-man playoffs and lost 48-0. WEEK 11 Corning's trip to the playoffs was one-and- done as Batchelder re- turned for Orland and the Trojans beat the visiting Cardinals 13-7. Batchelder scored from 50 yards out on the second play of the game. Orland pushed the lead to 13-0 and it would be all the scoring the Tro- jans would need. Nelson finished with 169 rushing yards and Corning's lone score on 20 carries. Football FROM PAGE 1 kept it from being worse. Woods shot another 74 and missed the cut in a major for the fourth time. "I tried as hard as I could," Woods said. "That's about all I got." Oddly enough, McIl- roy opened with the ex- act same scores (66-67) as Woods did 14 years ago at Valhalla, when he barely outlasted Bob May in a playoff for his third straight major of the sea- son on his way to an un- precedented sweep of golf's biggest events. McIlroy, who was at 9-under 133, isn't nearly at that stage. And his compe- tition going into the week- end is a little more expe- rienced. Furyk, a former U.S. Open champion who was runner-up last year at the PGA, got up-and-down from behind the green on the par-5 18th for birdie and a 68. Moments earlier, Day capped off the best round of a soggy day with a birdie on the 18th for a 65. Day has three runner- up finishes in the majors. Right behind were Ryan Palmer (70) and Rickie Fowler (66), a runner-up in the last two majors. Even so, McIlroy is dan- gerous when he gets in the lead, especially at a ma- jor. He learned his lesson at Augusta National in 2011 when he tried to pro- tect a four-shot lead and wound up shooting 80. He bounced back for an eight- shot win at the U.S. Open, won the PGA Champion- ship by a record eight shots a year later and only last month went wire-to-wire to win the third leg of the career Grand Slam at the British Open. "My mindset has stayed the same since that day at Augusta," McIlroy said. "If I'm two ahead going into the weekend here, I'm go- ing to try to get three ahead. And if I'm three ahead, I'm going to try to get four ahead. ... I'm just going to try to keep the pedal down and get as many ahead as possible." He didn't take his first lead until the par-5 18th hole, the midway point of his round. Major FROM PAGE 1 The offense couldn't get going, with penalties play- ing a big role. The defense was shredded by Minne- sota quarterback Matt Cassel on their first pos- session, which ended in a 1-yard scoring run by Matt Asiata. The Vikings also got a 30-yard field goal by Blair Walsh. The Raiders averted a shutout when third-string quarterback Matt McGloin scored on a 10-yard scram- ble with 1:25 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Raiders failed on a two- point conversion attempt, hoping to secure a win in regulation rather than get the ball back, tie the game and go to overtime. Quarterback Matt Schaub, the man identified by general manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Den- nis Allen to be the 18th dif- ferent starting quarterback since the Raiders last had a winning season in 2002, completed 3 of 7 passes for 21 yards. Rookie Derek Carr com- pleted 7 of 10 passes, but for only 45 yards and one of his short throws was too high and glanced off the hands of Jamize Olawale for an interception. The Raiders' very first snap was a 5-yard pen- alty on Menelik Watson for a false start, a prelude to a three-and-out that set up an opening Minnesota possession that conjured up memories of the worst of 2013 in terms of defense. Cassel, who may or may not hold on to the start- ing job over rookie Teddy Bridgewater, took the Vi- kings 70 yards in 10 plays with Asiata scoring from the 1-yard line. In his only series, Cassel passed for four first downs, two to wide receiver Cor- darelle Patterson against cornerback Tarrel Brown, one for 23 yards to Greg Jennings against Carlos Rogers, and finally a 22- yard strike to tight end Kyle Rudolph to the 1 with Tyvon Branch arriving late. Minnesota, even with Adrian Peterson sitting out the game, had 75 rush- ing yards on 16 carries in the first half, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Penalties included the false start by Watson on the first snap and a face mask on Brian Leonhardt that negated a 7-yard run by Maurice Jones-Drew. Raiders FROM PAGE 1 July 19 concussion before being activated Aug. 2, but left the game Wednesday with a headache. Royals: Left-hander Ja- son Vargas made his sec- ond start after a July 9 appendectomy, giving up nine hits and two runs in five innings. OnDeck Giants: Tim Hudson will be making his 11th ca- reer start against the Roy- als, but his first since 2004 when he was with Oakland. Royals: James Shields, who has a 1.99 ERA in his past six starts, has a 26-12 career record with a 3.15 ERA in August.
