THESCORE By Doug Ferguson The Associated Press LOUISVILLE, KY. Rory McIlroy is making this PGA Championship feel like 2000 all over again at Val- halla. Back then, it was Tiger Woods who was making the game look easy as he started to pile up ma- jors. Now it's McIlroy, the 25-year- old from Northern Ireland who produced superior shots with his long game and made all the right putts Friday for a 4-under 67 that gave him a one-shot lead over Ja- son Day and Jim Furyk. "When I'm playing like this, it's obviously very enjoyable," McIlroy said. "I can't wait to get back out on the course again tomorrow and do the same thing all over again." For Woods, such feelings are becoming distant memories. He missed two short putts early — one for birdie, one for bogey — and looked as if he should never have tried to play the final major of the year with a sore back. FOOTBALL Spartans open with double practices By Rich Greene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter The official start of the 2014 football season comes Monday, the first day Northern Section teams are allowed to hold prac- tice. Before diving into the year that could be, let's take a look back at the year that was the 2013 prep football season. A year that featured a memo- rable Tehama County Shootout, yet another Corning playoff ap- pearance and a midseason for- feit that gave Red Bluff a lifeline. WEEK 0 In 8-man football Mercy opened up on the road against the team that ended their previous season in the playoffs. The result wasn't any different as Redding Chris- tian pounded the Warriors 70- 18. Redding Christian would go on to win the section champi- onship. Meanwhile in Los Moli- nos, the Bulldogs opened up an- other year with hopes of just fin- ishing the season, they lost to visiting Williams 56-0. WEEK 1 It didn't take long for Christian Shaffer to show what an impact he would have for Red Bluff in the coming sea- son. Shaffer scored on offense and defense within a 23-sec- ond span as the Spartans won at Oroville 41-7. Corning was up to its usual game plan, rack- ing up 326 rushing yards in a 44-7 win over visiting Las Plu- mas. Mercy rebounded to win its home opener 40-0 against Elk Creek as Tommy Garcia threw three touchdown passes. WEEK 2 Chance Nelson ran for three scores and had two inter- ceptions on defense to spark Corning in a 31-6 win over visit- ing Oroville. In Red Bluff's home opener the Spartans started slowly, but eventually ham- mered Anderson 42-8. Los Mo- linos lost at home to Weed 41- 0. Mercy visited Hayfork, where the Warriors lost 58-15. WEEK 3 The Spartans and Cardinals both entered the Te- hama County Shootout with un- defeated records. In one of the more dramatic and well-played games in recent years, Shaffer scored with 1:05 remaining to give Red Bluff a 21-14 win. The Spartans pushed their lead in the rivalry series to 25-23-1. Mercy fell on the road again, this time to Greenville 42-25. Alejandro Guerrero rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns in the loss and made 17 tackles on defense. WEEK 4 The Spartans' unde- feated start to the season came to a crashing halt as visiting Enterprise handed Red Bluff a 40-0 defeat. Enterprise went on to claim the section title and a trip to a state bowl game. The Spartans struggled to recover from the loss. In Willows, Corn- ing scored all of its points in the second half for a 20-0 win. Alex Davila rushed for 163 yards and two scores. Guerrero scored four times for Mercy as the Warriors got back in the win column with a 33-26 road win at Loyalton. WEEK 5 Corning continued its rebound from the Red Bluff loss with a 33-22 win at Lassen. The Cardinals' offense racked up 449 rushing yards, 243 coming from Davila. Nelson and Davila each had two touchdowns. Nelson also picked off two passes. Red Bluff continued its stumbles, falling at Shasta 35-14. Mercy lost at home 52-18 to Princeton. Garcia had a pair of rushing touchdowns, threw for a third and made 18 tackles. In its first game since Week 2, Los Molinos lost 41-6 at Etna. It was the first points the Bulldogs had scored in a game since Oct. 29, 2010, af- ter their previous two seasons were ended prematurely due to a lack of players. WEEK 6 Red Bluff's roller- coaster season reached a new low and a new high in what turned out to be a crazy week for the Spartans. On the field, Chico hammered Red Bluff 61- 10. Since starting the season 3-0, Red Bluff was outscored 136- PREP FOOTBALL THE YEAR THAT WAS: LOOKING BACK As new season comes Monday, a look at 2013 for Red Bluff, Corning, Mercy, Los Molinos RICH GREENE — RED BLUFF DAILY NEWS FILE PHOTO Christian Shaffer and the Red Bluff Spartans beat Corning 21-14in the annual Tehama County Shootout in 2013, but it would be the Cardinals who ended up with the better season with a playoff berth.
