The victim had been found unconscious and bleeding inside a residence on Live Oak Road after sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a domestic disturbance, a sher- iff’s press release said. Fiery Fourth Fires burn restaurant, jail, home By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer Firefighters were busy over the holiday weekend with five fires between 5 a.m. Sunday and 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, including the Riverside Bar and Grill, a fire at Tehama County Jail and a struc- ture fire in Rancho Tehama, in which a fire- fighter was injured. • The cause of an early morning fire at Riverside Bar and Grill, 500 River- side Ave., in Red Bluff is under investigation. A sprinkler system water overflow alarm that went off just after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday alerted Red Bluff Fire, which dis- patched firefighters. Upon arrival, firefight- ers located an active fire in what appeared to be a storeroom off the kitchen area of the restaurant. A single sprinkler head had activated and helped keep the fire in check until firefighters were able to contain it about 10 minutes after arrival. A preliminary damage estimate puts the loss at between $10,000 and $20,000 with a $500,000 save. Red Bluff Police and CalFire assisted. • CalFire and Tehama County Fire were dis- patched at 5:09 a.m. Sun- Witnesses said the family had returned to the residence after a celebration in Shasta County when the brothers began to argue, the release said. The argument escalated and turned into a physical fight in which both men were injured. Ronnie Matheson was stabbed, sheriff’s logs said. However, the cause of death is pending an autopsy, the release See DEATH, page 5A Boy drowns in Black Butte Lake By ANDREA WAGNER DN Staff Writer A 14-year-old Orland boy drowned Monday after- noon at Black Butte Reservoir near Corning. Witnesses saw Angel Valdovinos-Martinez walking in the water about 15 yards from the shore in Anglers Cove before he slipped into deeper water, said Lt. David Greer. He couldn’t swim. The boy’s hand was seen above the water before he disappeared, a sheriff’s release said. Bystanders found the boy in about seven feet of water and pulled him to shore. The lone resident at home during the incident was uninjured, but a fire- Woman reports kidnapping on Red Bank Road By ANDREA WAGNER DN Staff Writer Sheriff’s deputies are looking for a woman who reportedly forced another woman at knife point to drive her to an area west of Red Bluff Friday evening. The suspect, described as a white female in her late 20s with brown hair, wear- ing a pink tank top and blue jeans, had been walking on Red Bank Road near Balis Road when she approached the victim’s vehicle. The suspect asked the victim, a 27-year-old woman, for the time, the release said. Then the sus- pect asked the woman for a cigarette lighter and some money. The victim refused to give money or a lighter. She was looking in the center console of her vehicle when the suspect got into the pas- senger seat and pulled out a small folding blade knife, the release said. The suspect told the woman to drive to the end of Red Bank Road, the logs said. She got out at the cor- ner of Red Bank and Live Oak roads and left the area in an unknown direction. Just before the incident occurred, another call reported a woman with the same description was seen wandering in the area for at least two hours yelling odd things, the logs said. The suspicious woman had begun going door-to-door asking for a ride into town. Deputies have a lead on the suspect but the case is still under investigation, the release said. Her bed was made to look as if she was sleep- ing and it appears she may have left voluntarily with her boyfriend, Jacob Scott Peterson, a police release said. Peterson was seen leaving the area of the residence at the time Sara was discovered missing by the girl’s father, who confronted Peterson, ask- ing to look inside the van he was in, the release said. Peterson refused and sped away from the area in the van, which is described as a white 2004 Ford mini- van, California license 5CZB065. Neither Miranda’s family nor Peterson’s have heard from the pair since Friday and it is believed they may still be driving in the van. Miranda is considered at risk due to her age. Anyone with informa- tion is asked to call Red Bluff Police at 527- 3131. —Julie Zeeb Vina church takes parade honors Special to the DN The 2011 Los Molinos 44th Annual Fourth of July Parade and Play Day were once again co-spon- sored by the Tehama-Los Molinos V.F.W. Post # 3909 and the Los Molinos Chamber Of Commerce. The parade was led by The Marine Corps League Color Guard. Opening ceremonies were in front of the Los Molinos Cham- ber of Commerce, 7904 Highway 99E with the National Anthem sung by Miss Tehama County, Kerry DeFonte. The Los Molinos Hon- orary Mayor for 2011 is Rick Singer. Sabrina Fritz is first vice mayor, Jenna Gilardi is second vice, Juliana Scifo is third vice and Kevin Benson, Sr. is the fourth vice mayor. The Honorary Mayor is chosen through a race that kicks off in May in which the candidate with the most money collected at the end of the race wins.
