Last weekend, the Rogue Rollergirls had their home teams' debut in their
final home bout of the season. The Homewreckers took on the Ritzy Rollers
in two 30-minute periods of action-packed all-women flat-track roller-derby
greatness. Guest skaters from the Palmetto State Rollergirls and the Ring City
Rollergirls made appearances in the bout, adding to the fierce competition
between the two teams.
The first period started out with West Coast MaFia, of the Ritzy Rollers,
gaining lead jammer — and many
points — over Blurred Vision of the
Home Wreckers. This jam set the pace
for the first period, as the Rollers
dominated. Rogue rookie Chub-E
Check'her caught the Wreckers off guard
with her jamming debut that evening.
Although the Rollers were jammer-heavy
on their roster, the Wreckers had size on
their side. However, it wasn't enough as
the Rollers held an 18-point lead going
into intermission.
The jammer for the Rollers started
the second period in the penalty box,
which gave the Wreckers a chance to
catch up. A huge 20-point scoring jam
nudged the Wreckers ahead by two,
giving them the lead. The second period
was a game of cat-and-mouse, and the Rollers and Wreckers kept jockeying for
the lead. Shady Sadie dropped the Wreckers' jammers like sacks of flour, and
West Coast earned the high scorer title of the evening.
At the end of the evening, a valiant effort was made by Blurred Vision to
close the point gap. Unfortunately, the Wreckers were unable to pull ahead, and
the Rollers took the win 145 – 119.
FLASHBACK: In February, the Soul City Sirens from Augusta, Georgia,
made the trek up to Fayetteville to take on your home team Rogues. After 60
minutes of hits and falls, they failed to conquer the Rogue warriors. In a couple
of weeks, the Rogue Rollergirls will be traveling to Augusta for a rematch against
the Soul City Sirens, behind enemy lines. Who will be the victor in this matchup?
Many people don't realize the hidden expenses behind roller derby. There
are production costs, rink rental, and most importantly – TRAVEL FEES for
away bouts. The Rogues are lucky enough to have
some amazing sponsors to help them with these ex-
penditures.
Many thanks go out to the fine artists of
Shooting Star Tattoo on Yadkin Road, who have
been a brilliant sponsor and avid supporter of Rogue.
Additionally, many of the girls have been inked by
these fine people, and the work has been spectacu-
lar. Also to Paddy's Irish Pub, on Raeford Road, for
advocating the work the Rogues do and giving us a
place to carouse. Edward McKay's, on Bragg Blvd.,
has always given us another outlet for our merchan-
dise and ticket sales. Brain Box Development gave
the entire Rogue Web site (found at www.roguer-
ollergirls.com) a facelift. And CCE Headgear, at the
Cross Creek Mall, has been another strong patron
for the girls. Without the generous
contributions of all these
exceptional people, Rogue might not be the flourishing league
you see before you today. Three cheers!
